Backpack is a company focused on building trusted and easy-to-use products in the crypto space. As a Lead Product Designer, you will own the design system that supports the product, collaborating closely with Product Design, Engineering, and Product Management to create a world-class product experience.

Responsibilities:

Own our design system end to end — tokens, primitives, components, patterns, and documentation
Define a token architecture (color, typography, spacing, elevation, motion) that scales cleanly across themes and platforms
Partner daily with engineering to ship the system in code, with tight Figma-to-code parity
Advocate for and educate product teams on best practices for designing and building with the system
Set the standards and governance that keep the system coherent as more designers and engineers contribute
Structure the system to be AI-ready — semantic, well-documented, and consumable by the tools reshaping design and front-end work

Requirements:

7+ years of experience as a product designer, design engineer, or similar role, with significant time spent on design systems
A deep passion for bridging design, code, and systems-level thinking
Demonstrated experience building or substantially scaling a design system at a product company (please share examples)
Deep expertise with design tokens, theming, and component architecture in Figma
Strong understanding of how systems translate into production front-end code, and a track record of close collaboration with engineers
Fluency with accessibility standards (WCAG) and an eye for the details that make a product feel trustworthy
Experience in fintech, crypto, trading, or other data-dense, regulated products
Familiarity with AI-assisted design or front-end tooling
