Staff Software Engineer, Backend

Role Overview

• Own the technical direction for HubSpot’s public APIs
• Design and ship new APIs while refactoring legacy APIs
• Lead large, cross-cutting improvements prioritizing usability and reliability
• Build and operate high-volume, scalable data APIs
• Architect systems for synchronization of multiple distributed systems
• Reduce technical complexity and modernize legacy patterns
• Mentor engineers and influence cross-team technical decisions
• Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to shape API strategy
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to enhance productivity

Requirements

• Significant experience designing and owning public APIs used by external developers
• Strong point of view on API contracts, including versioning and developer ergonomics
• Experience building high-volume read/write data APIs with reliability
• Experience in systems integration or data synchronization
• Track record of delivering large, high-impact technical changes
• Demonstrated cross-team influence and mentoring of engineers
• Deep reliability mindset and designing fault-tolerant systems
• Typically 10+ years of industry experience
