Legal Counsel, Litigation

Role Overview

• Manage a full caseload of litigation matters
• Provide timely advice, opinions and representation to our business partners on litigation and pre-litigation issues
• Attend examinations for discovery, mediations, settlement conferences and court appearances
• Draft pleadings, briefs and other legal documents
• Contribute to strategic projects that support the business units we serve and help develop the litigation function, its efficiency and capabilities
• Participate in team and business partner meetings
• Prepare and deliver presentations to our business partners on key litigation issues

Requirements

• Law degree and active membership in the Law Society of Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia or Alberta (and willingness to obtain any required authorization to practice in other provinces)
• At least three years of relevant civil litigation experience, including insurance-related litigation, in a law firm or in-house
• Knowledge of life and health insurance products or the financial services sector is an asset
• Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team
• Ability to work autonomously, prioritize tasks and organize workload to meet deadlines
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to summarize and present matters clearly to key stakeholders or senior management across business lines and functional areas
• Proven analytical and problem-solving skills; experience simplifying and resolving complex issues
• Proven drafting, legal and communication skills; practical, solution-oriented approach and ability to use clear, plain language
• Excellent judgment with the ability to identify key issues and provide independent perspectives to management in a clear, pragmatic manner
• Strong understanding of and up-to-date knowledge of court procedures
• Strong organizational skills, exceptional time management abilities and experience handling competing priorities
• Excellent negotiation skills
• Experience using e-litigation tools and techniques
• Strong ability to use the Microsoft Office suite effectively and other relevant technologies
• Ability to focus, analyze and perform tasks requiring a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
