Provide timely advice, opinions and representation to our business partners on litigation and pre-litigation issues
Attend examinations for discovery, mediations, settlement conferences and court appearances
Draft pleadings, briefs and other legal documents
Contribute to strategic projects that support the business units we serve and help develop the litigation function, its efficiency and capabilities
Participate in team and business partner meetings
Prepare and deliver presentations to our business partners on key litigation issues
Requirements
Law degree and active membership in the Law Society of Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia or Alberta (and willingness to obtain any required authorization to practice in other provinces)
At least three years of relevant civil litigation experience, including insurance-related litigation, in a law firm or in-house
Knowledge of life and health insurance products or the financial services sector is an asset
Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team
Ability to work autonomously, prioritize tasks and organize workload to meet deadlines
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to summarize and present matters clearly to key stakeholders or senior management across business lines and functional areas
Proven analytical and problem-solving skills; experience simplifying and resolving complex issues
Proven drafting, legal and communication skills; practical, solution-oriented approach and ability to use clear, plain language
Excellent judgment with the ability to identify key issues and provide independent perspectives to management in a clear, pragmatic manner
Strong understanding of and up-to-date knowledge of court procedures
Strong organizational skills, exceptional time management abilities and experience handling competing priorities
Excellent negotiation skills
Experience using e-litigation tools and techniques
Strong ability to use the Microsoft Office suite effectively and other relevant technologies
Ability to focus, analyze and perform tasks requiring a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
