prepare technical reports, letters, and memos for development of transportation projects.
Produce design elements for profile grades, geometrics, drainage, pavement, retaining walls and other components related to transportation projects in accordance with Caltrans or local agency standards.
Apply and develop basic knowledge to include a variety of project elements including construction details and administration, staging, utility plans, and other components of plans, specification, and estimates (PS&E).
Calculate quantities and prepare engineering estimates.
Perform preliminary field investigations and other research Prepare alternative design options and document findings.
May work remotely anywhere in California.
Requirements
this position requires a bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in civil engineering, or closely related field, plus 2 years of work experience as assistant engineer for transportation design or closely related occupation.
Documented experience preparing documentation for highway design from planning documents and memos to final design plans, specifications and estimates for construction.
Roadway engineering, signing and striping layouts and traffic signal design and analysis.
Roadway design and CAD drafting using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation and/or Open Roads Designer.
Application of Caltrans Highway Design Manual (HDM), California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), AASHTO Green Book and Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) to roadway and traffic design.
Understanding federal and local government rules and standards for highway design in California.
Ability to explain technical terms to non-engineers at public meetings and client meetings.
