About this role
Role Overview
Develop, maintain, and apply 1D simulation models for powertrain and thermofluid systems, including intake, exhaust, cooling, lubrication, and energy recovery systems.
Work closely with CFD and cross-functional engineering teams to optimise fluid flow and thermal performance across the power unit.
Support concept design and system architecture decisions through simulation-driven insights.
Perform model validation and correlation using test bench and real-world data, ensuring accuracy and predictive capability.
Develop and enhance bespoke and commercial simulation tools, improving modelling fidelity and efficiency.
Analyse large datasets, interpret simulation and test results, and provide clear technical recommendations.
Contribute to development loops, linking simulation, test, and design iterations to drive continuous performance improvements.
Support engine and powertrain testing activities, including collaboration with test engineers to validate simulation outputs.
Document methodologies, assumptions, and results, ensuring traceability and knowledge sharing across teams.
Communicate findings effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Requirements
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
Postgraduate qualification (MSc or PhD) in a relevant field is advantageous.
Strong academic foundation in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
Strong expertise in 1D simulation tools (e.g. GT-SUITE, AMESim, Ricardo WAVE, or similar).
Solid understanding of internal combustion engines, hybrid powertrains, or high-performance propulsion systems.
Knowledge of fluid dynamics and thermal systems modelling.
Experience in model development, calibration, and validation.
Ability to interpret complex data sets and translate findings into actionable engineering insights.
Strong problem-solving capability, particularly when working with incomplete or imperfect data.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting technical findings.
Ability to work effectively within cross-functional engineering teams.
Experience working on high-performance powertrain development, motorsport, or advanced R&D programmes.
Exposure to simulation-driven development environments, including correlation with test data.
Experience in engine test-bench environments and understanding of test methodologies.
Familiarity with manufacturing considerations and their impact on simulation models.
Experience contributing to iterative development loops between simulation, design, and validation.
Prior involvement in hybrid power unit development or motorsport applications is highly advantageous.
