Numeral is building the automation backbone for internet commerce, focusing on sales tax compliance. They are seeking an Automation Engineer to replace manual financial workflows with reliable automation and work closely with engineers, operations, and product teams.
Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain automations that replace manual financial operations, including sales tax filings, registrations, reconciliations, and exception handling
- Design workflows that combine browser automation (e.g. Selenium/Playwright-style tooling), internal APIs, and AI-assisted decision logic
- Translate ambiguous operational processes into deterministic, repeatable automation steps
- Investigate failures in automated workflows, diagnose root causes, and implement fixes to improve reliability
- Collaborate with operations teams to understand how work is done today, then design systems that remove the boring parts
- Use AI tools pragmatically to accelerate development, debugging, and iteration
- Improve observability and auditing so automated processes are explainable, traceable, and trustworthy
Requirements:
- Experience building or maintaining automation systems, internal tools, or workflow-driven software
- Strong debugging and systems thinking skills: You enjoy answering 'why did this fail?' and 'how do we prevent it?'
- Comfortable working with: browser automation tools (Selenium, Playwright, or similar), or workflow / orchestration systems (n8n, Zapier-style tools, internal engines), or glue code that connects multiple systems together
- Ability to reason about data correctness, state, retries, and failure modes
- Comfortable learning new internal tools and adapting to evolving systems
- Clear communicator who can explain what a system is doing and why
- Experience in finance, payments, accounting, tax, or compliance-heavy domains
- Experience automating interactions with third-party web portals
- Familiarity with SQL or basic data investigation for debugging workflows
- Experience using AI tools (LLMs, copilots, agents) to speed up development or automate decision-making
- Startup experience or comfort working in fast-changing environments
- Familiarity with Typescript, Temporal, and PostgreSQL
