Ulteig is seeking a talented and motivated Lead Engineer to strengthen our utility-focused power system stability capability within the power markets. This role partners closely with transmission owners, public power, and RTOs/ISOs on planning studies and capital projects that interconnect to the grid.
Responsibilities:
- Lead utility stability studies using PSS®E: transient stability, voltage stability, .dyr assembly/curation, dynamic model validation, event definitions (faults/clearing times), controls behavior (governor, exciter, PSS), UFLS/UVLS and FIDVR considerations, and mitigation recommendations
- Define study scopes aligned to planning criteria and interconnection processes (e.g., NERC TPL P0–P7, ISO/RTO planning manuals), and present defensible assumptions and results to utility stakeholders
- Mentor and develop junior and mid-level engineers through paired studies, code/study reviews, and structured learning sessions; contribute training materials, templates, and SOPs
- Build repeatable automation with the PSS®E Python API (case prep, batch runs, QA checks, result extraction/plots, and reporting)
- Support related steady-state analyses in PSS®E and, as applicable, TARA for transfer limits and contingency screening
- Interface with utilities, RTOs/ISOs, and developers on scoping, progress, and findings; support proposals, level-of-effort estimates, and schedules
- Uphold high standards for model QA (dynamic data vetting, time-step/algorithm settings, convergence safeguards) and documentation quality
- Plan for a meaningful portion of your time (e.g., ~20–30%) spent mentoring and upleveling teammates while still delivering complex stability work
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET-accredited) or equivalent required
- 7+ years of power system studies experience, with 5+ years directly leading stability studies for US utility/ISO/RTO planning or interconnection
- PSS®E steady-state and dynamics — required. (Demonstrated expertise with .dyr curation, model tuning/validation, event-based analysis, and mitigation development.)
- Experience with ISO/Utility interconnection processes and study methodologies or transmission planning—required
- Demonstrated ability to independently complete assigned tasks and actively manage workload
- Proven mentoring and team coaching capability
- Analytical, self‑motivated, calm under pressure; strong presentation and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with staff, management, clients, and external agencies
- Demonstrates openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement
- Authorization to work permanently in the U.S. required
- MSEE (Power Systems) preferred
- Experience working with project developers—preferred
- Experience with TARA steady-state—preferred; familiarity with TSAT/DSATools, PSLF, PowerWorld (Dynamics), PSCAD—a plus
- Proficiency with Python for PSS®E automation and results processing—preferred (or willingness to adopt quickly)
- PE licensure—preferred (or ability to obtain)
