Electric Power Engineers (EPE) is focused on designing the grid of the future and is seeking a Principal Engineer with expertise in EMT studies and model benchmarking. The role involves leading large-load power system modeling, providing subject matter expertise, and collaborating with various teams to enhance the organization's offerings in the energy sector.
Responsibilities:
- Perform EMT studies as well as model benchmarking studies in accordance with IEEE, ISO and Utility guidelines
- Serve as a subject matter expert on EMT/RMS model benchmarking as it relates to Large Load and generator interconnection studies
- Lead and perform advanced large ‑ load power system modeling and dynamic impact studies to assess system performance and interconnection requirements
- Serve as subject matter expert on modelling issues and model tuning specifically for EMT models
- Passionate about solving difficult technical problems, providing innovative solutions and taking ownership of the solutions provided
- Identify optimal strategy for project interconnection to the grid based on system impacts and grid capacity
- Collaborate with other teams within EPE to provide strategic guidance on market trends and modelling changes across multiple ISO’s in North America
- Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including clients, industry organizations, and regulatory agencies
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies, market innovations, and best practices in the energy industry to enhance the organization's offerings and capabilities
- Carry out additional duties as assigned
Requirements:
- 5 to 7 years of experience in the electric energy industry
- Experience in Large Load modelling and EMT studies
- In-depth knowledge of at least one EMT software package such as PSCAD
- Knowledge of modelling guidelines in ERCOT is required
- Experience in managing and mentoring technical teams
- Active participation in industry taskforces and/or working group
- Hands-on experience performing large-load modeling and analysis using industry-standard tools, including PSCAD and PSS®E, with the ability to develop, validate, and interpret detailed steady-state and dynamic simulation models
- Experience with developing EMT models for Large Load projects
- Experience in generator modelling, EMT studies, transmission planning and interconnection studies
- Additional market experience is also preferred and a plus (PJM, SPP, MISO, NYISO, ISO-NE, and/or SERC)
- Experience with RMS tools and dynamic models (especially user defined RMS models) would be considered a significant plus
- Experience with developing EMT models for IBRs or HVDC projects would be considered a plus
- Automation experience (Python, C#, SQL) would be considered a plus
- Knowledge or real time simulation tools (RTDS, OPAL-RT) would be considered a plus
