Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. (MEPPI) is a leader in North America's power systems and is seeking a Systems Studies Engineer I to perform power systems engineering studies. The role involves conducting various analyses, executing load flow studies, and preparing technical reports to support grid operators and utilities.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct insulation coordination, harmonic, short-circuit, and grounding studies for T&D systems, including FACTS, HVDC, and converter-based resources
- Execute load flow, transient stability, reactive planning, and generator interconnection studies
- Perform specialized studies on renewables, distributed energy resources (DER), battery energy storage (BESS), and grid modernization
- Utilize software for relay and protection studies and performance monitoring
- Support generator testing and the development of simulation models validated against industry standards
- Condition models and evaluate simulation outputs based on expected system capabilities and equipment operations
- Estimate equipment parameters using known values or provide critical feedback when data quality is questionable
- Apply structured, engineered processes through all stages of a study to ensure consistency and quality
- Prepare and present reports for internal and external clients, maintaining high standards for grammar, formatting, and minimal re-work
- Maintain and apply an understanding of the evolution of standards, orders, guidelines, and tariffs
- Prepare papers and articles for professional journals, trade magazines, and presentations at industry conferences
- Assist with study initiatives for other MEPPI departments and divisions
- Conduct business in a timely, cooperative manner to further the professional image of the Power Systems Engineering Division (PSED)
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of MEPPI's Quality, Safety, and Environmental Policies and their direct impact on engineering work
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with 0-2 years of experience through internships and/or co-op programs with emphasis on electric power engineering, or equivalent education and experience
- Basic knowledge of electric power systems and equipment operation and control
- Intermediate interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills required to communicate with customers and employees
- Ability to work in a team environment and on multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to change within a fast-paced business environment
- Familiar with the following programs and modeling tools: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related; ATP, EMTP, EMTP-RV, PSCAD, MATLAB, ASPEN, CAPE, and CDEGS; PSLF, PSS/E, DigSILENT, DSA Tools, Power World, and related; CYME, Synergi, etap, Milsoft, and Plexos; Economic software like PROMOD or MAPS; C, C++, MATLAB, Java, Perl, Python, and others
- Intermediate knowledge of industry standards and guides (NESC, NERC, IEEE, IEC, and CIGRE)
