Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company is seeking a Lead Finance Analyst specializing in derivatives for their Investment Accounting team. This role involves leading investment accounting activities related to derivative instruments and collaborating with various teams to ensure accurate accounting and reporting.
Responsibilities:
- Perform and lead investment accounting activities related to derivative instruments, including futures, options, swaps, and other complex investment products
- Perform, independently review and critically evaluate hedge effectiveness testing including regression analysis (prospective and retrospective) and critical terms match assessments. Design, execute and document regression testing methodology, assumption, thresholds and conclusions including formal hedge documentation
- Prepare, review, and analyze journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules related to derivatives as part of the monthly and quarterly close process including support of regulatory filings and audit support related to investment and derivative activity
- Provide monthly accounting and reporting for the derivative portfolio, in accordance with US GAAP (ASC 815) and Statutory (SSAP 86, 109), and established Investment Accounting Policy
- Conduct detailed investment analytics and financial analysis to support management reporting and decision-making
- Prepare derivative-related financial statements and disclosures
- Partner with Investment Management, Treasury, Risk, and other Finance teams to understand transactions, resolve issues, and explain financial impacts in a clear, business-focused manner, ensuring deliverables are completed accurately and on time
- Identify, recommend, and implement process improvements, system enhancements, and controls to improve efficiency, accuracy, and transparency within investment accounting
- Provide assistance on technical accounting research and guidance on new or complex derivative transactions
- Assist internal audit with controls testing, and external auditors ensuring SOX compliance. This would include, the development, documentation, testing and reviewing controls and procedures
- Mentor and provide guidance to other analysts on the Investment Accounting team, promoting continuous learning and process consistency
Requirements:
- Demonstrated ability to independently perform, review, validate, and challenge advanced statistical and regression-based hedge effectiveness analyses, including interpretation of model outputs, diagnostics, and limitations
- Experience reviewing quantitative analysis prepared by external consultants, including reassessment of assumptions, data inputs, methodologies, and conclusions
- Strong understanding of statistical concepts such as correlation, R‑squared, p‑values, confidence intervals, multicollinearity, residual analysis, and model stability over time
- Ability to translate quantitative findings into clear, defensible accounting conclusions for auditors, regulators, and senior management
- Strong knowledge of finance and accounting principles, with experience in investment accounting and derivative instruments
- Solid understanding of GAAP and Statutory accounting, preferably within the insurance or financial services industry
- Strong problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making skills, with a focus on identifying root causes and sustainable solutions
- Advanced analytical tool proficiency, with hands-on experience using Excel beyond standard formulas (i.e. PowerQuery, Power Pivot, Solver, etc) and at least one statistical or data analysis tool such as Python, R, SAS, SQL or equivalent analytics platforms
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with a strong working knowledge of Excel, with the ability to analyze and interpret complex financial data
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences

- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of experience
- Advanced degree or professional designation such as CPA preferred
- Experience accounting for derivatives within an insurance company or large financial institution
- Familiarity with investment accounting systems (Clearwater Analytics), general ledger platforms (ERP tools), and financial reporting tools (Power Query, OLAP cubes)
- Familiarity with AI tools a plus
