Ampirical is shaping the future of the power grid with precision, innovation, and purpose. They are seeking a Senior or Associate Staff Protection & Control Engineer to identify appropriate protection and control schemes, ensure adherence to client standards, and mentor junior engineers.
Responsibilities:
- Identify appropriate protection and control schemes for transmission and distribution substations
- Select protection devices and ensure proper equipment sizing and material procurement
- Prepare scopes of work, estimates, and drawing packages (wiring diagrams, schematics, protection panels, one‑lines, three‑lines)
- Perform load calculations for panels, battery systems, voltage drop, and other substation components
- Ensure adherence to client standards and industry regulations related to relay protection
- Provide field support and conduct pre‑inspections for turnkey substation projects
- Interface with clients and vendors to ensure technical accuracy and project alignment
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance
- Collaborate with internal teams to refine design and construction processes
- Associate Staff Engineers are expected to demonstrate deeper technical leadership, broader project ownership, and increased mentorship responsibilities
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited university
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- In lieu of PE: +2 years of additional experience
- Senior Engineer: 7+ years in protection & control design within utilities or the energy sector
- Associate Staff Engineer: 12+ years in protection & control design within utilities or the energy sector
- Experience with ETAP, WinIGS, and IEEE 80/998
- Strong knowledge of SCADA, automation, relay settings, RTU configuration, and P&C engineering concepts
- Experience in the electric utility industry
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem‑solving skills
