As an electric cooperative, Hendricks Power is part of the nation's largest energy network which includes 1,000 electric cooperatives, public power districts, power supply generation and transmission cooperatives, statewide associations, regional trade and service associations, supply and manufacturing cooperatives, data processing cooperatives and employee credit unions. Electric cooperatives alone serve 32 million customers in 46 states, and cover more land mass than any of the nation's single electric utilities. Hendricks Power Cooperative celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2001. Formed in 1936, following the creation of Franklin D. Roosevelt's Rural Electrification Administration (REA), Hendricks Power Cooperative started with a small meeting of 12 people, farmers and rural residents, unable to convince the local utility, which was owned by investors, to build lines to serve them. They claimed it simply wasn't profitable to provide service to such sparsely-populated areas. The formal construction of these rural electric lines began the summer of 1937. On January 1, 1938, the first 122 miles of line was energized. Approximately 400 members received power to their homes and farms for the first time. The name Hendricks County Rural Electric Membership Corporation (REMC) was adopted, as the cooperative slowly grew. Today, Hendricks Power Cooperative serves over 35,000 members in Hendricks, Putnam, Morgan and Montgomery counties.

Job Description

Hendricks Power Cooperative is now accepting applications for the position of Groundman on our Operations Line Crew. Join us and help provide safe, reliable energy to over 40,000 members across portions of Hendricks, Morgan, Montgomery and Putnam counties.

We’re a growing, member-owned rural electric cooperative located just west of Indianapolis in Avon, Indiana. As a progressive utility committed to innovation, member satisfaction and employee development, we continuously invest in preventive maintenance, equipment and infrastructure upgrades, advanced technology and training.

Position Summary

The Groundman assists linemen in the construction, replacement, and maintenance of the electric distribution lines, structures, and equipment. Responsibilities include digging holes for utility poles, flagging traffic, framing poles, identifying materials, tools and equipment needed for assigned jobs, and loading/unloading materials and equipment. This is a bargaining unit position.

Qualifications

Preferred candidates will possess the qualifications listed below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:                                                                                                            

• High School diploma or GED.
• Experience operating digger derrick trucks, bucket trucks, chain saws, and other construction/maintenance equipment preferred.
• Proficiency with computers and related technology.
• First aid and CPR certification or the ability to obtain.

Personal & Position Qualifications:

• Valid Indiana Driver’s License.
• Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 180 days.
• Physical ability to perform work outdoors in all weather, dig holes for utility poles, lift up to 100lbs, flag traffic, walk on varied terrain, and clear rights-of-way.
• Ability to read and follow cooperative maps, safety manuals, work orders, staking sheets and other documentation related to work being performed.
• Demonstrate initiative, sound judgement and teamwork.
• Must meet residency requirements within one year of hire.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to operate commercial vehicles and other line equipment.
• Subject to random drug and alcohol testing per FMCSA regulations and Cooperative policies.

Candidates selected for an interview must be available on Saturday, April 18, 2026, to participate in Groundman Testing.
