
The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) is seeking passionate and dedicated Part-Time Lecturers in Chemistry to join our vibrant academic community. This is an exciting opportunity to deliver rigorous, engaging instruction across our core General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry sequences in both lecture and hands-on laboratory settings.
This role is integral to our commitment to providing high-quality, accessible education that supports a diverse student body - from traditional learners to non-traditional professionals - pursuing degrees in science, health professions, and education. At UMF, you will contribute to a dynamic learning environment that utilizes various instructional modalities, including but not limited to face-to-face, synchronous, and asynchronous formats, allowing you to connect with and mentor a broad range of aspiring scientists.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Sample Courses:
CHY 141/142 (General Chemistry I & II): This sequence covers light and its interaction with matter, atomic and molecular structure, stoichiometry, chemical bonding, gas laws, periodicity, and thermochemistry. Major topics also include kinetics, chemical equilibria, acids and bases, electrochemistry, and thermodynamics.
CHY 241/242 (Organic Chemistry I & II): This sequence covers the structure, properties, and reactions of the principal classes of carbon compounds based on modern views of chemical bonding, thermodynamics, and kinetics. Mechanistic, synthetic, and biological aspects or organic reactions are also examined. The laboratory introduces students to techniques of preparation, separation, purification, and identification of organic compounds, including spectroscopy and reaction methodology.

Salary & Benefits
Part-time faculty members are compensated on a per-credit-hour basis, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and in accordance with the Maine Part-Time Faculty Association (PATFA) contract. Teaching opportunities in future semesters are based don course finding, performance, need, and availability. Continuation is subject to the terms of the PATFA bargaining agreement and other applicable University policies.
Eligible part-time faculty members may elect certain benefits provided by the University of Maine System.
