About the Opportunity
This is an open position with Mon Power, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [MP]
There are current two (2) openings we are seeking to fill at the Fairmont location.
Mon Power is seeking an experienced technical leader to supervise Substation Protection & Controls activities. This role is ideal for electrical engineers or controls technicians looking to apply strong technical expertise while advancing into leadership and supporting grid reliability.
The Supervisor oversees planning, scheduling, construction, maintenance, testing, and technical support for substation protection and control systems.
Responsibilities include:
- Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all safety requirements.
- Monitor field practices, identify hazards, and provide coaching and corrective action as needed.
- Establish clear expectations, priorities, and performance standards.
- Supervise construction, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of substation protection and controls equipment.
- Oversee protective relay maintenance, scheme testing, and documentation to meet NERC/BES requirements.
- Support and troubleshoot SCADA, power line carrier systems, fiber communications, and disturbance recording equipment.
- Provide technical guidance for outage planning, equipment isolation, and cross‑department coordination.
- Estimate labor, materials, and resources for P&C projects, track progress, utilization, and costs.
- Ensure proper availability of tools, equipment, materials, and test devices.
- Support system restoration efforts during emergencies and major events.
- Coordinate work schedules, staffing assignments, and project plans with engineering, operations, and construction teams.
- Facilitate ongoing training in standard work practices, testing methods, and safe operating procedures.
- Maintain strong internal and external customer service.
- Direct employees performing complex construction, maintenance, repair, testing, and troubleshooting activities related to protective systems.
- Ensure adherence to preferred practices, safety guidelines, and engineering standards.
- Lead and support restoration activities, including dispatching responsibilities when assigned.
- Request and coordinate required tools, materials, and equipment, support development and execution of work plans.
- Ensure timely and accurate closeout documentation for completed work.
- Administer safety, absenteeism, and performance management programs.
- Conduct job site visits and monitor adherence to work coordination, information transfer, and safety processes.
- Schedule, review, and complete all required relay maintenance and testing; verify documentation for regulatory requirements.
- Lead investigations into relay or equipment mis-operations and support engineering teams as needed.
- Provide technical support for communications networks, SCADA, relays, and other intelligent electronic devices.
- Provide after‑hours support for maintenance, troubleshooting, and operational events.
- Seek opportunities to improve customer satisfaction and propose effective solutions
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with utility experience; or Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology with 4+ years of P&C or related experience; or Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and relevant field experience.
- Advanced experience in protective relaying, SCADA, communications systems, and fault recording technologies.
- Strong understanding of AC/DC circuits, system protection fundamentals, and engineering prints and schematics.
- Knowledge of clearance/switching procedures, construction standards, and preferred work practices.
- Ability to use systems such as WMI, CREWS, SAP, CASCADE, RTS, AcSELerator, and related relay communication tools.
- Effective leadership, communication, and team‑development capabilities.
- Experience in union environments is preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to coach, mentor, and develop technical staff.
- Commitment to problem‑solving, continuous improvement, and quality customer service.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and guide employees through performance management processes
