Position Summary:
The Industrial Fire Captain oversees activities including fire suppression, emergency medical incidents, hazardous materials spills and other emergency incident calls and supervises a fire crew to ensure safety. The Industrial Fire Captain provides assistance to the Clients Health, Safety and Environment division.
Essential Functions:
Fire Suppression
- Manages the day-to-day operation and maintenance of a fire station and the apparatus and personnel assigned to that station.
- Supervise a fire and rescue crew and the station apparatus dispatched to emergency scenes, including fire scenes, emergency medical calls, hazardous materials incidents, etc.
- May serve in the capacity of incident commander at emergency incidents.
- Must be able to perform the duties of subordinate positions.
Operational Duties
- Responds to fire and other emergency incidents as directed by the alarm room.
- Enforces established department safety procedures.
- Responsible for inspections and be familiar with the location of streets, buildings, hydrants and unusual hazards in their respective first due areas.
- Maintains order and discipline in their command at all times.
- Assists with planning, organizing, and controlling station objectives in accordance with all company philosophies, strategies, goals, objectives, principals and procedures.
Communications
- Must conduct all radio communications in a professional, respectful manner.
Customer Service
- Conducts fire safety, home safety, fire extinguisher and pre-fire planning inspections.
- Provides information to the public, install smoke detectors, conduct station tours, visit schools, and participate in public education standbys.
- Work requires cooperative/supportive interaction with co-workers, supervisors, doctors and other healthcare workers.
- Work requires interaction with representatives of other City departments, other fire departments and local, state and federal agencies.
Administrative
- Completes, reviews and forwards all required Fire Station/Company reports.
- Responsible for completion of required administrative forms and station logs.
- Ensures that their station has all required manuals and maintains the station training library.
- Must have thorough knowledge of Fire SOG's and administrative policies.
- Must have thorough knowledge of applicable collective bargaining agreements.
Training
- Ensures participation by his crew in all company required training events.
- Conducts in-service company training.
- Responsible for the completion of all assigned Safety inspections and Pre Emergency Plans.
Supervision
- Directs technical and functional supervision over firefighting staff.
- Ensures that apparatus, tools, equipment and quarters are maintained by crews daily.
- Ensures all required reports are completed daily.
- Communicates any required department orders, directives, memos, etc. promptly and consistently.
- Serves as a role model by consistently displaying exemplary leadership through action and example.
Compliance:
- Has complied and enforced all policies and procedures.
- Successfully completed all Compliance Training within the required time period.
- Was not suspended for delinquency of compliance training.
- Has had no compliance related corrective action.
Additional Duties:
- Other duties may be assigned that are specific to the local operation
Qualifications:
- Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate. Must pass background investigation and pre-employment drug screen.
- Must be certified as an NFPA 1001 Firefighter I (State, PROBOARD, IFSAC or equivalent)
- Must be certified to the NFPA 472, Hazardous Materials-Operations (State, PROBOARD, IFSAC or equivalent)
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I (State, PROBOARD, IFSAC or equivalent) preferred, Experience as a Fire Officer is required
- Must have NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800
- Must be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician at time of hire and must maintain this certification throughout term of employment
- Valid driver license with acceptable driving record in accordance with company policy.
- Must have AHA CPR/AED
- NFPA1081, Confined Space Rescue, Rope Rescue I & 2, Hazardous Materials Technician (Highly Desirable).
