Stantec is seeking dynamic and creative candidates to join our US West Geotechnical Team as an Intermediate Level or Senior Civil or Geotechnical Engineer specialized in Rock Mechanics. This position offers the opportunity to work on rock engineering and geotechnical projects as part of multi-discipline project teams in our western regional offices and abroad. You will be responsible for developing cost effective, state-of-the-art engineering designs and construction solutions for our clients. We are looking for a team player with strong technical, communication and organizational skills to lead technical deliverables and engage with clients and the project team. You should bring experience in project management to the team and should see mentoring of junior team members as a key aspect of your work. This position interacts throughout the organization internally and externally with clients and members of business and professional organizations. An ideal candidate will have a broad range of experience in planning, design, and construction phase services. Domestic and international travel may be required.
Your Key Responsibilities

- Supervise and mentor junior Geotechnical staff members and support hiring new talents.
- Share knowledge with the team and support junior team members career growth.
- Lead projects and small teams of people to complete work on time and on budget and provide technical leadership and review.
- Provide geotechnical advice, analyses, designs, and plans.
- Engineering analyses and design for a variety of rock engineering and geotechnical projects related to slope stability, kinematic analysis tunneling and underground excavations, foundations, rockfall hazards and mining.
- Rock mass characterization and assessment of geological and/or geotechnical conditions.
- Planning and execution of field investigations.
- Occasional field work, which may include visual site inspections, rock slope stability assessments, geological/geotechnical mapping including photogrammetry
- Monitoring of field activities, such as borehole drilling or installation of rock support and ground monitoring instrumentation or detailed rock core logging.
- Prepare technical memoranda and detailed reports pertaining to field investigations and design studies.
- Develop, oversee, and review civil/geotechnical field and laboratory testing investigations; primarily focused on mining projects.
- Follow safe work practices and adhering to company and client guidelines and policies for planning and executing work in a safe manner.
- Develop proposals and support other Marketing and Business Development tasks.
- Develop client relationships.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Exceptional technical writing skills, organizational skills, technical leadership abilities, oral communication skills, and attention to detail.
- Experience with mine pit wall design.
- Proven expertise in rock engineering with practical experience in geotechnical mapping, core logging, rock mass characterization and a good understanding of Rock science geotechnical software.
- Experience in numerical modelling and with soil mechanics would be of benefit.
- Ability to work independently and make decisions in the office and in the field at remote sites.
- Ability to lead and mentor younger professionals.
Education and Experience
- Minimum of a B.S. in Civil Engineering with preference given to advanced degrees. Relevant field of engineering (such as Geotechnical, Geological, Mining Engineering or Engineering Geology) is also applicable.
- 7+ years of experience working on civil and/or geotechnical engineering projects, focusing on design, site investigation, reporting and business development on tailings and mine waste projects.
- Existing professional registration (P.E.) or ability to obtain within 3-6 months of starting work.
