
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Dental Assistant is responsible for assisting the Dentist in providing dental care to patients and in providing a link between the dental clinic and the treatment team to communicate the treatment plan developed by the Dentist.
QUALIFICATIONS:
•Current certification with the Ontario Dental Nurses and Assistant Association
•Completion of a Level II program/NDAEB
•HARP approved
•2 years previous experience as a Dental Assistant working with mental health patients required
•Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills in dealing with patients, families, substitute decision makers and other staff
•Excellent organizational skills
•Excellent telephone manner and etiquette
•Demonstrated excellent problem solving skills
•Proficient computer skills
•Good performance and attendance record
•Demonstrated ability to work independently
RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Perform the duties of Chairside/Dental Assistant – Level I and Level II
•Promotion of good oral hygiene and oral health education
•Prepares dental instruments for sterilization
•Answers and returns patient’s family phone calls promptly while maintaining confidentiality
•Assist with the transfer of patient to dental chair if appropriate
•Making appointments for dental work required
•Identifies the need and demand for supplies/equipment and submits orders
•Records and documents accurately
•Communicates to the patient’s treatment team, family and/or substitute decision maker the treatment plan and costs (if applicable)
•Communicates to the patient and staff necessary instructions post-dental visit
•Adheres to Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and SJHH policies and Mission and Values
•Provide care in a friendly, dignified and respectful manner
