Corza Medical is dedicated to providing exceptional products and service to surgical providers. The Senior Design Engineer – Surgical Suture Needles will be responsible for designing and developing high-performance suturing needles, focusing on various technical aspects such as needle geometry and material selection.
Responsibilities:
- Design and develop curved suturing needles including taper point, reverse cutting, and specialty profiles
- Define critical geometric features such as tip radius, facet angles, edge symmetry, and curvature control
- Balance penetration force, drag, and edge durability across intended clinical use cases
- Translate clinical and surgeon feedback into measurable engineering requirements
- Define and support test methods for penetration force, drag, and edge retention
- Select and specify metallic materials used in surgical needles (e.g., stainless steel alloys)
- Define cold working, annealing, and heat treatment strategies to achieve target mechanical properties
- Control hardness, ductility, toughness, and grain structure to optimize performance and manufacturability
- Collaborate with material suppliers to establish performance-based material specifications
- Develop needle designs compatible with high-volume manufacturing processes
- Support and optimize forming, stamping, grinding, and edge creation processes
- Define electropolishing, passivation, and surface finishing requirements
- Support application of silicone or friction-reduction coatings where applicable
- Partner with manufacturing engineering to improve process capability, yield, and consistency
- Support automation and reduction of operator-dependent variability
- Work closely with Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Regulatory teams
- Support technology transfer from development to production
- Provide technical input for risk analysis, design reviews, and continuous improvement efforts
Requirements:
- 8–12+ years of experience in surgical needle design, development, or manufacturing
- Strong understanding of needle geometry, sharpness mechanics, and tissue interaction
- Hands-on experience with metallic materials and heat treatment processes
- Experience supporting high-volume precision manufacturing
- Familiarity with regulated medical device development environments
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgy, or related discipline
- Regular travel to our Tijuana, Mexico facility monthly
