Boehringer Ingelheim is a global company dedicated to supporting scientific discovery in the field of Computational Biology. The Senior Principal Systems Engineer will provide high-quality user and system support, ensuring robust and scalable compute environments that empower scientists in their research efforts.
Responsibilities:
- Provide high-quality user and system support to Computational Innovation colleagues, acting as a trusted technical partner
- Support R/Python scientific tooling, libraries, and execution environments
- Support troubleshooting automation and computational workflows (e.g., Nextflow)
- Support AWS services like S3, EC2, SageMaker (and/or Datbricks)
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues across infrastructure, applications, and workflows
- Implement and maintain Jenkins pipelines for research applications and automations
- Operate, maintain, and continuously improve research IT systems throughout their full system life cycle (design → deployment → maintenance → retirement)
- Collaborate with global IT, platform teams, and scientists to scale cloud enabled compute environments
Requirements:
- Associate degree in Computer Science, MIS or related field with minimum 11 years experience; or Bachelor degree in Computer Science, or MIS, or related field with a minimum 9 years of experience; or a Master in Computer Science, MIS, or related experience with minimum of 7 years of experience; or relevant Business or IT experience of minimum of 11 years
- Associate degree in Computer Science, MIS or a related field with 7 years experience; or Bachelor degree in Computer Science, MIS or a related field with 5 years of experience; or a Master in Computer Science, MIS, or related field with a minimum of 3 years of experience; or relevant Business or IT experience of a minimum of 7 years
- Proven experience in hands-on user support, ideally within scientific or data driven environments
- Advanced Linux administration skills in a networked environment, e.g. HPC
- Experience working with R and Python-based notebook environments (e.g. SageMaker, Databricks, Jupyter)
- Experience with CI/CD platforms (e.g. OpenShift,Jenkins)
- Familiarity with AWS core services (S3, EC2 at minimum)
- Demonstrated experience managing complete system life cycles
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction
- Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Practical experience with Nextflow is an asset
- Strong background in application development and operations (DevOps mindset preferred)
