onXmaps, Inc. is a high-growth tech company focused on helping people explore the outdoors through technology. They are seeking a Software Engineering Manager III to lead engineering teams responsible for core data infrastructure and delivery systems that support their suite of apps, ensuring operational excellence and fostering team development.
Responsibilities:
- Make great engineers better. You'll support your teammates with individual goal-setting, professional development, and mentoring. You'll coach engineers through structured growth plans and partner with senior/staff-level ICs to set technical direction for the teams
- Make great software. You'll work with your teams to ensure you're delivering maintainable, high-quality platform systems that internal and external customers depend on. You will lead your teams in design, development, testing, deployment, and operations, with a focus on reliability and developer experience
- Build great teams. You'll work closely with your peers to hire smart, creative, and kind engineers. You'll be responsible for building and sustaining a healthy team culture where ownership and collaboration are the norm
- Own operational excellence. You'll establish and maintain production reliability practices including SLO definition and monitoring, incident management, on-call sustainability, and postmortem culture
- Collaborate. You'll manage dependencies between functional teams and facilitate collaboration across engineering, Product, Product Design, and business stakeholders. Your teams build foundational capabilities used across onX's apps, making cross-functional alignment critical
- Lead through others. You can drive a project yourself or direct teams and technical leaders to a desired outcome. You provide thought partnership for your team, challenging and elevating your team to develop robust architectural and technical strategies
- Translate. You'll translate business strategy, customer insights, and organizational priorities into clear engineering direction, helping your team understand the "why" behind the roadmap and how their work connects to onX's goals
- Communicate. You'll err on the side of over-communicating. You'll work closely with product managers and engineers to set ambitious but attainable goals, articulate the value of platform work, and build organizational buy-in for infrastructure investments
Requirements:
- At least five (5) years of experience directly managing software engineers
- Proven ability to lead teams building platform, infrastructure, or data systems that other engineering teams depend on
- Experience establishing operational excellence practices: SLOs, incident management, on-call rotations, and production reliability frameworks
- You have led teams through ambiguous, fast-changing product stages and can bring structure and clarity without slowing pace
- You have improved engineering velocity, quality, and observability across teams, and are comfortable introducing or maturing workflows, processes, and metrics
- You can connect engineering work to business goals, making decisions that balance customer value, quality, and impact
- You're comfortable using AI-assisted tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and velocity, and can help your team adopt them effectively

- Experience designing or leading complex server-side architectures for high-volume consumer-facing products
- Experience working with APIs, platform components, or developer experience tooling that support large-scale B2C applications
- You understand how product, growth, and revenue metrics influence technical priorities in a fast-growing business
- Experience with GCP, Kubernetes, or similar cloud infrastructure
- You have a B.S. or M.S. in computer science or a related field or experience
