Position Summary

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications for a Health Programs (HP) Faculty Appointment position in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine (ECCM) at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will join our dynamic team to become the 7th Small Animal ECCM faculty member and an integral member of the service, which includes 6 Diplomates of ACVECC (and an additional 2 large animal Diplomates of ACVECC), 7 residents, and 20-30 service-dedicated licensed veterinary nurses. The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences comprises over 30 faculty and has an onsite, state-of-the-art Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The VMC provides outstanding patient care and is staffed with highly qualified veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, social workers, and other care providers to support the specialty services. In addition to ECCM, the VMC is well represented in specialty areas including highly active soft tissue and orthopedic surgery services, internal medicine, medical oncology, cardiology, anesthesiology, sports medicine and rehabilitation, theriogenology, primary care, interventional radiology, behavior medicine, ophthalmology, and dermatology.

Support from the specialty services for the ECCM Service is robust, including but not limited to daily (7:00 AM to 10:00 PM) full clinical laboratory and imaging coverage, a dedicated emergency surgery resident, and advanced cross-sectional imaging modalities available after hours. The ER/ICU was recently rebuilt to create a large, open-concept ICU with a dedicated quiet (feline) room, two mirrored isolation wards, and four treatment stations, all with a centralized workstation allowing the team to monitor patients closely and communicate effectively. The ICU currently utilizes advanced treatment capabilities, including Draeger Evita Infinity and Respironics Esprit long-term ventilators and the Prismaflex CRRT system (capabilities for hemodialysis, hemoperfusion, ultrafiltration, and therapeutic plasma exchange). In addition, the hospital boasts an interventional radiology suite, a wound management suite, 10 operating rooms, Storz HD video laparoscopy/thoracoscopy towers, Zeiss operating microscope, GE Revolution 64-slice helical CT, OEC mobile C-arm, Siemens 1.5 Tesla MRI, Scintron nuclear medicine suite, Varian linear accelerator, Olympus and Storz video-endoscopy.

The ECCM service has a highly successful resident training program with a busy caseload (>11,000 cases annually) and experienced, supportive faculty. The service sees 30-70 new cases daily and manages an average of 10-15 as inpatients. Our service philosophy focuses on active case management by all team members. The ECCM Faculty functions as a highly cohesive group, and we value and are committed to continuing to foster this exceptional team dynamic.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include management of ECCM cases, clinical instruction of house officers and students, assistance in the administration of the ECCM Service, and a commitment to scholarly contributions in the candidates’ areas of interest and expertise. Ample opportunity exists for interested individuals to become involved in scholarly activity related to veterinary medical education and curriculum development. Participation in the pre-clinical teaching curriculum and committee assignments is also expected. Assignments of clinical service, teaching, and scholarly activity are negotiable with the Department Chairperson. Evaluations and promotions are based on the faculty member’s performance within the agreed assignments. In addition to the two human medical schools on the MSU campus, we have several regional research institutes, cancer centers, and major human hospital complexes, providing unique and exciting opportunities for collaborative activities. Such activities are encouraged at both the Departmental and College level, and support is available for grant writing, acquiring external funding, and processing grant submissions.

The role of the successful applicant will encompass clinical service, education, and research/scholarly activity. The amount of time dedicated to each of these endeavors is flexible and will be geared towards the interests, strengths, and qualifications of the applicant. Health Programs (HP) appointments are unique to Michigan State University and are predicated on the need to enhance programs in clinical education, patient care services and clinical research. Health Programs (HP) appointments emphasize clinical service and teaching, although these positions are flexible to allow ample time for research and scholarly activity. Both tenure system and HP appointments are expected to contribute to preclinical and clinical education of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Health Programs (HP) appointments are unique to Michigan State University Colleges of Human, Osteopathic, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing and were created to enhance programs in clinical education, patient care services, and clinical research. HP faculty appointed in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences typically have 50-70% clinical assignments devoted to clinical and pre-clinical instruction, patient care services, and the general administrative efforts of the Department and College. In addition, HP faculty are expected to be active in research and other scholarly endeavors. Applicants must have a DVM/VMD or an equivalent degree. Must be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Michigan, including a Clinical Academic Limited and Controlled Substance licenses. The appointment requires board certification, or eligibility for certification, by the American Board of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Applicants interested in the tenure system appointment should have a track record of training and experience in hypothesis-driven science, preferably with evidence of independence to include extramural funding. The candidate should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with other faculty and staff. Outstanding clinical service and surgical skills in veterinary emergency and critical care medicine, outreach, consultation, and case management are also expected.
