Healthcare IT Leaders is a national leader in IT workforce solutions, connecting healthcare provider, payer and life sciences organizations with experienced technology talent for consulting and full-time hiring. They are seeking a highly experienced Cloud Application Architect with deep healthcare expertise to lead the modernization and migration of core clinical and third-party applications onto Azure and AWS platforms.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the end-to-end application architecture for healthcare cloud migrations across Azure and AWS
- Architect secure, highly available, compliant solutions for Epic, Cerner, and critical third-party systems (lab, radiology, cardiology, ERP, PACS, HIM, integration engines, etc.)
- Define cloud landing zones, network topology, IAM, encryption, tagging, FinOps structure, and disaster recovery patterns aligned to HITECH, HIPAA, HITRUST, and cloud provider best practices
- Partner with infrastructure, security, clinical application owners, and data teams to design future-state integrations across cloud, on-prem, and hybrid workloads
- Lead application assessments, migration strategies, and readiness analysis for hospital portfolios
- Identify modernization patterns (rehost, replatform, refactor, retire, replace) for both clinical and non-clinical apps
- Develop data-migration, integration, and high-availability strategies for EMR and ancillary systems
- Collaborate with clinical informatics teams to ensure workflow continuity, minimal downtime, and robust cutover plans
- Serve as a senior technical lead during migration waves, working with engineering, application teams, and system integrators
- Guide the buildout of cloud environments, including compute, storage, networking, security controls, databases, containers, and serverless
- Provide technical oversight for pilot migrations, proofs of concept, and rapid prototyping
- Ensure all migration activities follow compliance and regulatory standards, with validated testing and rollback plans
- Act as a liaison between cloud engineering, clinical applications, business partners, and external vendors
- Translate complex technical designs into executive-level communication for CIO, CMIO, CTO, and CISO audiences
- Support program governance, architectural reviews, risk mitigation planning, and value realization tracking
Requirements:
- 7–10+ years in enterprise application architecture, cloud architecture, or healthcare IT engineering
- Proven experience supporting or integrating Epic, Cerner, or another major EMR/EHR system
- Demonstrated experience migrating clinical and ancillary applications to Azure and/or AWS
- Strong understanding of: Healthcare interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR, CCD, X12), HIPAA, HITRUST, NIST 800-53, SOC2 controls, High-availability and disaster-recovery design in regulated environments
- Hands-on deployment experience with: Azure (VMs, App Services, AKS, Managed SQL, Storage, ExpressRoute), AWS (EC2, RDS, EKS, Lambda, S3, IAM, VPC, FSx for Windows, Direct Connect)
- Expertise in migration tooling and frameworks (Azure Migrate, AWS Migration Hub, CloudEndure, Zerto, HCX, database replication tools)
- Strong experience designing or supporting core clinical systems (Epic, Cerner) and third-party apps (PACS, Lab, Radiology, Pharmacy, ERP, RevCycle, imaging, etc.)
- Experience delivering full hospital or IDN cloud migrations (Epic-in-Cloud, Cerner-in-Cloud, hybrid deployments)
- Cloud certifications: AWS Solutions Architect – Associate or Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- Background in healthcare provider environments (Hospitals, IDNs, Academic Medical Centers)
- Experience designing cloud architectures for: High-performance databases, Real-time integrations and message buses, Observability and monitoring (CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Dynatrace, New Relic)
- Knowledge of FinOps principles to support cost-efficient architecture decisions
- Experience with VMware, VCF, or large data-center migration tooling
