Overview:
The first step in the printing of newspapers is producing the printing plates the printing press uses to apply ink to the newsprint. The Platemakers receive the digital page files from the graphic designers and output (print) them to large laser printer-like machines that image the pages on to the aluminum plates. With over 2000 plates imaged every day, it is the Platemaker’s responsibility to get the correct plates to the Press department, in the correct order, at the correct time.
Qualifications:
• Strong computer skills centered around communicating via email and IM.
• Able to learn specialized software used to output printing plates.
• Intense attention to detail – able to spot differences between similar file names.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Mechanically inclined to aid in troubleshooting equipment.
• Ability to stand and walk for hours at a time and to lift up to 40 pounds.
Key Responsibilities:
• Handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment.
• Set and achieve goals according to schedule.
• Adapt to rapidly changing requirements and schedules.
• Solve problems analytically and act on your own initiative.
• Coach and reinforce learning to promote internal customer relationships.
• Accurately record time and materials used in production.
• Maintain platemaking equipment by following cleaning instructions.
• Inspect output materials to ensure they meet quality standards.
• Follow directions from work orders and perform other duties as assigned.
Safety Responsibilities:
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Complete required OSHA safety training programs.
• Ensure all machine safety-guards are installed and functioning properly.
• Report any safety hazards, operational concerns, and accidents/injuries immediately.
Communication:
• Provide timely and accurate reports to the operations team and management.
• Report equipment issues promptly.
• Must be able to read and write english fluently.
