GENERAL DESCRIPTION:   Perform advanced (senior-level) custodial work in an assigned area. Work involves cleaning and caring for Department of Public Safety buildings and premises, maintaining custodial equipment, and requesting supplies. May train others. Work under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1.     Perform general custodial functions such as sweeping; mopping; dusting; and cleaning windows, light fixtures, and carpet.

2.     Inspect building and facilities for cleanliness and completed work.

3.     Perform restroom maintenance, replenish supplies, and apply cleaning chemicals as appropriate.

4.     Clean office furniture, walls, and windows; empty trash; and clean offices in entirety.

5.     Clean, dust, and disinfect areas such as restrooms, offices, and other facilities.

6.     Perform carpet maintenance and care.

7.     Review and recommend changes to custodial operations to improve efficiency.

8.     Operate floor maintenance equipment, including buffers, strippers, vacuums, and extractors.

9.     May oversee the work of contracted cleaning staff. In addition, provide training for the contractor/temporary staff and new custodial team members.

10.   May assist in moving furniture due to cleaning, office rearrangements, or special events.

11.   May perform minor equipment repair on custodial equipment.

12.   May maintain and restock custodial supply closets.

13.   May perform limited yard work, including but not limited to mowing, trimming shrubs in designated areas only, edging, pulling weeds, sweeping sidewalks, picking up trash on the ground, cleaning courtyard areas, and emptying trash cans/ashtrays near proximity of the building.

14.   Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.

15.   Perform other duties as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:  

Education – Graduation from high school or equivalent preferred.

Experience – Minimum of six (6) months of responsible work experience in cleaning methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work preferred.

Substitution Note:  Additional work experience of the type described or other related education may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.  

Licensure and/or Certification – Must possess a valid driver license from state of residence. 

Critical Organizational Infrastructure requirements – This job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure; must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role. Additionally, and more specifically, must not be employed by nor have any connection or continuous connections to any governmental entity or political apparatus of a country listed in 15 C.F.R. §791.4.

Custodial Knowledge – Ability to adequately perform assigned custodial work. Ability to use modern electrical equipment such as floor maintenance machines, high-speed buffers, carpet shampooers, extractors, automatic scrubbers, pressure washers, etc. Ability to read and understand warning labels on caustic cleaning chemicals.

Regulatory knowledge – Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures.  

Technology – Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems (e.g. CAPPS, SharePoint) and be able to learn new software/systems.

Confidentiality and Protected Information – Must demonstrate an ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations and adhere to applicable laws/statutes/policies related to access, maintenance and dissemination of information.

Safety – Must be able to work in safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices.

Schedule and Travel – Availability for after-hours and weekend work is required for special projects. Potential for travel up to 30%.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in the same salary group and state title as their current position will be transferred with no salary change.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary.

Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
