Senior Backend Software Engineer (Data Protection)

Russell Tobin is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help build and enhance a data protection platform that identifies, classifies, and safeguards sensitive data across large-scale cloud infrastructure. This role focuses on developing backend services and internal security tooling that detect potential data risks and prevent data leakage.

Responsibilities:

• Design and develop backend services to identify and protect sensitive data across systems
• Enhance data classification and protection capabilities within the organization’s data protection platform
• Debug and review code, including AI-assisted code, ensuring production-ready quality
• Deploy and maintain services in cloud environments using CI/CD pipelines
• Collaborate with data infrastructure and security teams to implement scalable security solutions
• Work with data pipelines and workflows supporting data governance and protection

Requirements:

• 5+ years of software engineering experience
• Strong backend development experience with Java, Python, or Kotlin
• Experience building and deploying production services in cloud environments
• Solid understanding of distributed systems, debugging, and scalable architecture
• Experience with data security, data governance, privacy engineering, or data protection platforms
• Experience with Apache Airflow or workflow pipelines
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform
• Experience working with Amazon Web Services cloud infrastructure
• Exposure to data classification, metadata systems, or AI/ML governance
