They are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Mailgun Optimize team, focusing on products like Email Validation and Inbox Placement while managing a high-performing engineering team.
Responsibilities:
- Leads, mentors, and grows a high-performing engineering team through regular 1:1s, coaching, and career development conversations
- Owns hiring, onboarding, and performance management to build an inclusive, high-trust team culture
- Guides design and architecture decisions to satisfy business requirements based on the product roadmap and vision
- Makes recommendations based upon established vision and associated analysis in order to satisfy tactical, operational, and strategic needs
- Partners with Product, Design, and business stakeholders to align on priorities, refine requirements, and communicate engineering progress
- Drives OKR planning, execution, and cross-team coordination to consistently deliver on commitments
- Designs sustainable solutions and processes that minimize developer support and intervention
- Identifies and mitigates technical risk early, escalating blockers and tradeoffs to leadership proactively
- Fosters a team culture of engineering excellence
Requirements:
- 5+ years of professional software development experience
- 3+ years of engineering management or tech lead experience, with a demonstrated track record of growing engineers and delivering complex projects
- Experience working in an Agile environment with CI/CD practices
- Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) and their tradeoffs
- Experience with highly scalable distributed systems capable of handling millions of requests
- Experience working with and maintaining RESTful APIs
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to discuss complex topics with both technical and non-technical audiences
- Proficiency in scripting (Python, Bash, or similar)
- Demonstrated ability to attract, develop, and retain engineering talent
- Experience with email systems
- Experience with observability tools (Kibana, Grafana)
