Visibly is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead their high-performance engineering team. The role involves managing a team of Senior Engineers while also contributing hands-on to the codebase and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
Responsibilities:
- Manage, mentor, and coach a distributed team of Senior Engineers
- Build a culture of accountability via documentation, traceability, communication, and efficiency
- Conduct 1-on-1s, drive performance reviews, and support team members
- Partner with Product and Executive leadership to translate business requirements into technical roadmaps, work items, team goals, and own follow-up and success
- Inform the architecture of our microservices cloud (AWS) environment and ensure our clinical algorithms are scalable
- Spend approximately 40-50% of your time contributing to the codebase
- Lead by example, taking on complex tickets, conducting rigorous PR reviews, and jumping in on mission-critical backend and infrastructure tasks
- Act as a technical steward for HIPAA, HITRUST, and FDA regulatory standards, ensuring our engineering practices meet the highest bars for data privacy, software validation, and documentation traceability
Requirements:
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2-3 years in a formal people management or team lead role
- Deep technical expertise in Node.js and modern frontend frameworks (React/Signals)
- Comfortable navigating both a legacy Ruby on Rails monolith and modern serverless microservices
- Expert-level knowledge of AWS (Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway) and microservices architectures
- Ability to empower engineers, maximizing their effectiveness through dynamic leadership, focused on collective outcomes
- Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts to engineering teams through written and verbal communication and to non-technical, strategy level stakeholders
- Deep experience with automated testing methodologies (we use Jest) and a 'test-first' mentality
- Experience working within HIPAA, HITRUST, FDA, or similar regulatory environments and an understanding of software validation and traceability
- Experience with Generative AI tools, RAG, agents, or machine learning pipelines
- Familiarity with Rails-based backends
