GENERAL DUTIES:
Coordination of all operational activities of medical physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Provides the leadership necessary to maintain quality patient care services requiring progressive, technologically advanced procedures. Directs and supervises the department’s Quality Assurance Program to ensure that departmental equipment and procedures satisfy any requisite TJC, State, County or Federal Regulation (e.g. Title 17, Title 22, 10CFR20).
To serve as the Radiation Safety Officer for the ComprehensiveCancer Center.
To actively participate in the Medical Center Radiation Safety Committee, the Comprehensive CancerCenter quality assurance activities and Safety Committees.
To plan for and assure appropriate resource allocation in collaboration with the Department Manager to include:
- New clinical programs.
- Equipment usage, selection, and replacement.
- Staff requirements, assignments, and recruitment.
- Annual budget preparation.
- To participate in the financial planning of the Department.
- To provide in-service education to the staff at appropriate times and intervals.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Assure compliance of all physical aspects of radiation producing equipment and radioactive materials including documentation:
- Acceptance testing, commissioning, and performance specification of new equipment.
- Calibration of radiotherapy machines and radioactive isotopes.
- Maintenance of all radiation measurement equipment and survey meter with validated calibration.
- Maintenance of the shipping and receiving documents for all radioactive materials
- Continual maintenance of the brachytherapy source inventory and leak test.
- Maintenance of all information necessary for the appropriate use of radiation sources (e.g. x-ray tube, linear accelerators, sealed sources).
- Development and maintenance of a quality assurance program for all treatment modalities, simulation procedures,and treatment planning software to assure that patients receive prescribed doses and dose distributions, within acceptable degrees of accuracy.
- Acquisition and storage of radiation beam data for computerized treatment planning.
- Coordination of patients’ treatments with radiation oncologist.
- Consults with radiation oncologists on the physical and radiobiological aspects of patients’ treatments and the development of treatment plans.
- Calculation of dose distributions and machine monitor units for patients’ treatments.
- Design and fabrication of treatment aids and beam modifiers.
- Weekly chart reviews.
- In-vivo measurement for dose verification.
- Development of techniques (hardware, software, or procedural) to improve the delivery of radiation treatments for better patient outcomes.
- Participation in weekly interdisciplinary chart rounds.
- In-service education for the radiation oncology staff.
- Assure compliance with Medical Center Radiation Safety Program.
- Designated Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for the Cancer Center.
- Share responsibilities with the Medical Center Radiation Safety Officer in the development and administration of the radiation safety program.
- Required:
- Complies with regulatory requirements (i.e. TJC) appropriate for position
- A MS or Ph.D. degree in Medical Physics or its equivalent with 4 to 5 years of experience in a clinical radiation oncology department
- Certified in Therapeutic Radiological Physics or Radiological Physics by the American Board of Radiology (current at all times)
- Currently enlisted with the State of employment as a qualified physicist and Authorized Medical Physicist on RAM license
- Effective communication skills and leadership ability; strong team building skills to develop a spirit of cooperation and collaboration in providing optimal physics support to radiation oncology.
