Product Design Lead

SmarterDx is seeking a Product Design Lead to build and lead design execution for their Clinical AI applications. This role involves managing a team of designers while ensuring high-quality and consistent design across various systems and user experiences.

Responsibilities:

• Report to the VP Product
• Lead design critique and review processes to uphold high quality and consistency across all team deliverables
• Lead and develop a team of 4-6 designers while remaining hands-on (~30–50%), guiding both system-level work and product feature design
• Collaborate with Product Management, Data, and Engineering leads on planning, prioritization, and delivery, representing the design team's capacity and perspective
• Champion an inclusive, feedback-driven team culture that fosters learning and continuous improvement
• Set a strong example for communication, cross-functional collaboration, and operational excellence
• Partner with designers to establish and embed strong Design team values, culture, vision, and guiding principles
• Partner closely with engineering to ensure high-quality implementation and design fidelity
• Drive work from concept through shipped product in fast-moving, iterative environments
• Define and uphold rigorous design quality standards for all team outputs, ensuring a consistent bar for craft, usability, and accessibility
• Own the team's end-to-end design process, from discovery through delivery, continuously iterating on rituals, tools, and ways of working for optimal alignment and effectiveness
• Serve as the primary escalation point for complex design challenges, ambiguous problem spaces, and cross-functional tensions requiring senior-level judgment
• Articulate the design team's work and priorities to external stakeholders, translating design decisions into clear business and user impact
• Drive cross-functional alignment on User Experience (UX) direction, ensuring Product Management and Engineering partners share a clear understanding of design intent
• Proactively identify gaps in team coverage or capabilities and surface resourcing, tooling, or process needs to design leadership to mitigate potential blockers

Requirements:

• Experience managing or formally mentoring designers, with a track record of developing design talent
• Ability to balance hands-on craft with people management — knowing when to do and when to delegate
• Strong facilitation and feedback skills; comfortable leading critique and aligning teams around design decisions
• 6+ years of product design experience, including at least 1–2 years in a lead, staff, or management capacity with responsibility for other designers' work
• 2+ years experience in healthcare or healthtech
• A portfolio that demonstrates system-level thinking as well as exceptional visual, interaction, and information-architecture work
• Experience designing intuitive experiences for expert users navigating large volumes of structured and unstructured data (dashboards, review workflows, decision-support tools)
• Proven track record of building and maintaining design systems in production environments, including component design, theming, and governance
• Design experiences that surface AI-driven insights and support clinical decision-making within complex healthcare workflows
• Comfort writing clear documentation and guidelines that scale adoption across multiple teams
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with demonstrated ability to represent the design team across engineering, product, and leadership stakeholders
• Experience with AI/ML or decision-support systems
• Experience in RCM, EHR, billing, charting, or transcription tools strongly preferred
