
Senior Data Engineer – Data Analytics Epic Cogito Platform Stewardship | Data Architecture Leadership

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will serve as a key technical leader responsible for shaping and maintaining the data architecture that supports our enterprise analytics ecosystem.
You will own the full depth of the Bronze‑Silver‑Gold data architecture—from raw source ingestion through conformed, analytics‑ready layers—and ensure the accuracy, performance, and reliability of the pipelines that move clinical and operational data into the Epic Cogito environment. As the most senior contributor on the team, you will guide technical direction, uphold architectural integrity, and lead stewardship of the Epic Cogito platform, including Turbocharger package management, Content Manager, and environment monitoring through Epic upgrade cycles. You will also serve as a resource and mentor to mid‑level and junior engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Lead design, development, and maintenance of ETL/ELT pipelines across Bronze‑Silver‑Gold data layers
Manage data ingestion from on‑premise clinical and operational systems into Epic Cogito and SQL Server environments
Develop and optimize complex SQL stored procedures, ETL logic, and database objects in SSMS
Serve as primary steward for Epic Cogito platform components, including Caboodle, Turbocharger, and Content Manager
Oversee Cogito environment monitoring, maintenance, and support through Epic upgrade cycles
Ensure architectural consistency, data quality, and performance across all layers of the data platform
Translate business and clinical requirements into technical specifications and data models
Support regulatory and compliance needs, including HIPAA, Meaningful Use, and TJC requirements
Mentor junior and mid‑level engineers, promoting best practices and technical growth
Collaborate with analytics, clinical, and operational stakeholders to deliver reliable, actionable data solutions
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, Health Information Management, or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience
Seven years of progressive data engineering or analytics experience
Minimum of three years working in a clinical or hospital environment utilizing the Epic system
Hands‑on experience with Epic Clarity and Caboodle data models in a production environment
Working knowledge of Chronicles source structures and Caboodle dimensional design
Expert‑level SQL proficiency with demonstrated ability to design and optimize complex stored procedures and ETL logic
Experience building and maintaining ETL pipelines and data extracts in on‑premise SQL Server environments
Experience with Epic Cogito components including Caboodle, Turbocharger, and Content Manager
Familiarity with HIPAA, Meaningful Use, and other healthcare regulatory requirements
Licensure/Certification
Current Epic certifications required
Candidate must hold at least two of the following: COG170, CDW110, CLR110, COG240, CDW300v, CDW320
All certifications must remain current
Deep understanding of clinical documentation, orders databases, workflows, and Epic master file structures
Ability to translate business and clinical needs into system specifications and data models
Strong analytical skills with the ability to apply technology solutions to improve workflows and operational efficiency
Expertise in evaluating system functionality, data structures, and relationships across complex environments
Proficiency with SQL, Power BI, SSIS, and Epic reporting tools
Strong working knowledge of web‑based technologies, analytics tools, and development/configuration platforms
Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities, technologies, and organizational needs
Demonstrated leadership skills including meeting facilitation, conflict resolution, and project planning
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and clinical teams
Highly self‑directed, detail‑oriented, and organized, with a proven ability to drive change and build strong relationships
