They are seeking a Staff Power System Studies Engineering Specialist to lead complex design-related studies for transmission line, substation, and renewable generation projects, while providing technical guidance and mentorship to engineers.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and perform complex engineering studies for transmission line, substation, and renewable generation projects
- Develop study reports with clear narratives, rigorous analysis, and actionable recommendations
- Build and maintain strong client relationships, helping shape expectations and ensuring alignment with deliverables
- Resolve complex and novel technical challenges through expert engineering judgment and advanced power system knowledge
- Lead coordination across multiple projects involving cross‑departmental engineering teams
- Provide quality control for deliverables and serve as a reviewer for high-risk or high-visibility study deliverables
- Mentor engineers across multiple experience levels and disciplines
- Define analytical methodologies and refine modeling standards for the studies team
- Oversee development of advanced data processing workflows, templates, and automation tools that increase speed, consistency, and quality across the team
- Assist with ensuring that modeling and validation methods are optimal across projects
- Contribute to proposal development, including scopes of work, cost estimates, and technical approach
- Contribute to the development of calculation workbooks, templates, internal standards, and knowledge-management repositories
- Guide decisions on software adoption and integration strategies
- Participate in industry committees and conferences to maintain technical expertise and enhance Ampirical's industry presence
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an ABET accredited university
- OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an ABET accredited university
- OR PhD in Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an ABET accredited university
- Professional Engineer (P.E., P.Eng.) license OR In lieu of Professional Engineer license, 2+ years of additional experience is required
- Bachelors and minimum 10+ years of experience ( OR Masters and 8+ years ; OR PhD and 6+ years ) performing power system analysis, with specific expertise in one of the following areas: Electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis (e.g., insulation coordination, TRV, capacitor bank switching), Conductor optimization, Electromagnetic field (EMF) and corona effects studies, Substation grounding analysis, System studies (e.g., load flow, short circuit), Power quality studies, AC interference (transmission line impact on adjacent facilities)
- Demonstrated mastery of advanced modeling tools such as PSCAD, CDEGS, WinIGS, ETAP, POLARIS-EMF, CAFEP, COMSOL, ASPEN, GridscaleX, PSS/E, PSLF
- Strong understanding of applicable industry standards (IEEE, IEC, NESC)
- Experience with electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis and PSCAD experience preferred, though other relevant specialties or equivalent modeling tools are also acceptable
