About this role
Switchboard is a company focused on transforming the commercial insurance brokerage landscape to better serve America's small businesses. They are seeking a Founding Software Engineer who will design and build AI agents to streamline brokerage tasks and take ownership of full-stack development, contributing significantly to the company's strategic direction.
Responsibilities:
- Design and build AI agents that handle the repetitive brokerage work (emails, submissions, quoting, data entry)
- Full-stack ownership (backend, frontend, infrastructure, deployment). We ship features from concept to production in days not weeks. Our tech stack includes: Ruby on Rails 8.1, Hotwire (Turbo + Stimulus), Postgres, and AWS, but experience with Rails is not required
- Build production-grade systems with state machines, data pipelines, and financial operations (ACH, billing, Stripe)
- Make architectural choices affecting the product's long-term direction
- Collaborate closely with founders on strategy and product
Requirements:
- Track record of taking products from zero to production as a primary IC. We don't care about years of experience, we care about what you've shipped and owned
- High agency: you've operated without a PM and didn't need one
- Strong backend fundamentals: OOP, domain modeling, clean abstractions
- Comfortable across the stack with integration-heavy systems and external APIs
- Ship code daily with AI tools with a deliberate workflow
- Effective cross-disciplinary communicator
- Insurance, fintech, or regulated-industry experience
