Designed Conveyor Systems (DCS) is a company that specializes in custom material handling and conveyor design solutions. As a Controls Engineer, you will lead the hardware aspects of controls projects, design electrical systems, and ensure projects are delivered on time while contributing to the evolution of electrical standards and team capabilities.
Responsibilities:
- Lead controls electrical designs and assists with implementation for material handling systems
- Design electrical systems, including field device placement, control panel layouts, and electrical schematics using AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN
- Select components, design networks, develop Bills of Materials (BOMs), and validate equipment
- Program PLCs and oversee system commissioning, debugging, and validation
- Provide on-site troubleshooting and technical support during installation
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to customer satisfaction
- Develop and maintain controls and electrical design and installation standards
- Collaborate with vendors to evaluate and implement emerging Material Handling System technologies
- Identify cost-saving opportunities through value engineering without compromising performance
- Mentor engineers and contribute to knowledge-sharing across the Controls team
- Participate in Controls team initiatives, process development, and tool creation
- Support recruiting efforts and provide feedback on technology/software vendors
- Maintain open, timely communication with project teams and leadership
- Represent DCS with professionalism during site visits, customer meetings, and supplier interactions
- Contribute to a positive, team-oriented culture that emphasizes growth and accountability
- Attend weekly controls meetings and internal training sessions
Requirements:
- 6+ years of relevant experience (or 10+ years without a degree), ideally in the material handling industry
- Advanced AutoCAD Electrical/EPLAN experience
- Confidence in designing electrical schematics, control panels and material handling system layouts
- Mechanical inclination and comfort in both design and field environments
- Resourcefulness, independence, and a love for solving hard problems
- Proactivity, collaboration, and passion for continual improvement
- Flexibility and ability to manage multiple fast-paced projects at once
- Excellent communication skills — written and verbal
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% as needed
