Westinghouse Electric Company is seeking a Fire Safety Engineer to join their innovative team. This role involves serving as a subject matter expert on fire safety for utility-scale battery energy storage systems, overseeing safety analyses, and engaging with local jurisdictions and first responders.
Responsibilities:
- Review all UL 9540a reports from cell-, module-, and up through unit/installation-level, and provide direction
- Offer guidance toward the fire safety system designs of BESS manufacturers and projects
- Initiate and foster relationships with national, state, and local fire institutions and first responders, including Fire Marshalls, Fire Departments, and educational institutions
- Standardize information around BESS fire safety systems throughout the organization, ensuring messaging in every region in which our projects are deployed
- Participate in task groups and technical committees for collaboration and direction of the advancement of industry codes and standards about the safety of battery energy storage systems
Requirements:
- Background in fire protection engineering principles, fire dynamics, and battery technology safety
- Experience with NFPA 855 (Energy Storage Systems), IFC, and UL standards
- Software Skills: Experience with FMEA, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, and risk assessment methodologies
