
The sterile processing technician is responsible for the cleaning, packaging, storing, and distribution of supplies, instruments, and equipment used in patient care. Cleans, decontaminates, sterilizes, and assembles instruments and equipment, ensuring good working order.
Essential Functions
Cleans each item according to the manufacturer’s instructions; inspects, milks, and lubricates items as required
Ensures that each item is in good working condition, i.e., alignment, grasp
Sorts, arranges, and wraps items and trays according to established policies and procedures
Accurately labels each item with name and load number
Operates autoclaves, ultrasonic washers, and other equipment for processing items properly, placing items into each
Selects the proper cycle, being sure to seek assistance if instructions are not clear
Checks indicators for proper function
Performs biological monitoring techniques required on all sterilizers according to established policy and procedure
Changes and dates autoclave recording graphs
Cleans sterilizers according to established policies and procedures
Maintains adequate inventory of sterile items
Stores processed items in designated locations, including shelves and drawers, in accordance with established procedures
Checks sterile items in all areas of the facility weekly for outdated items
Performs an inventory of processing supplies and notifies the appropriate person when to reorder
Job Specifications
Typically has the following skills or abilities:
One year’s experience in central processing functions is desirable, or demonstrated ability in sterilization techniques
Certification from an approved sterile processing (CSP) technician course or in the process of achieving certification is preferred
Builds effective working relationships with co-workers and collaborates well in a team environment
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues, with judgment to escalate concerns to leadership when appropriate

The compensation range for the role is listed below. Applicable salary ranges may differ across markets.
