The PO operates at the intersection of customer needs, business priorities, and team execution, bridging daily delivery decisions with the broader product vision defined by Product Management.
• Act as the voice of the customer within the team, continuously exploring customer wants, needs, and preferences – whether customers are internal or external.
• Develop whole-product thinking by understanding the full desired customer experience, not just individual features.
• Apply design thinking and Lean UX practices to identify the right problems to solve and guide solution design.
• Know the stakeholders – balance the needs of customers with the expectations of Business Owners, Product Management, System Architects, and other teams.
• Engage regularly with Product Management to understand market forces, business drivers, and evolving priorities.
• Represent the end user's perspective in roadmap discussions, validating that planned solutions deliver real value.
• Assist with program backlog prioritization by collaborating with Product Management, System Architects, and Project Managers on sequencing decisions.
• Communicate the vision and roadmap to the team during PI Planning, ensuring they have the context needed to execute effectively.
• Own the team backlog end-to-end – ensuring it is always populated with well-defined, prioritized work ready for execution.
• Guide and review story creation, ensuring stories are clear, properly scoped, aligned to product strategy, and written with a user-centric voice.
• Prioritize backlog items regularly using Cost of Delay (CoD) and value-based frameworks to ensure the highest-value work flows first.
• Accept completed stories by confirming they meet acceptance criteria, definition of done (DoD), and quality standards.
• Collaborate with System Architects to make space in the backlog for enablers and architectural runway.
• Provide daily product guidance to the team, elaborating stories, resolving questions, and managing emerging priorities during iteration execution.
• Balance feedback from customers, stakeholders, and internal data – maintaining a customer-centric lens while respecting capacity and business trade-offs.
• Foster built-in quality by monitoring progress against acceptance criteria, NFRs, and the definition of done throughout the iteration.
• Actively participate in all team and program events: iteration planning, backlog refinement, iteration reviews, retrospectives, team syncs, and PI Planning.
• Test benefit assumptions by collaborating with Product Management to define expected value, then validating through customer and stakeholder feedback post-delivery.
• Gather qualitative and quantitative feedback through empathy interviews, Gemba walks, iteration reviews, system demos, and application telemetry.
• Share feedback and insights across the program – with Product Management, System Architects, and fellow POs through PO Syncs and program events.
• Continuously evolve solution design by feeding insights back into the Plan-Do-Check-Adjust cycle, driving relentless improvement of the team's output.
• Product Management owns product vision, market strategy, roadmap, and program backlog.
• The Product Owner translates that strategy into team-level execution – owning the team backlog, defining stories, and guiding the team toward high-value outcomes.
• Engineering designs, builds, and ships – with the PO as their daily product partner and customer proxy.
• 5–8 years of experience in product ownership, product management, or Agile delivery roles.
• Deep understanding of Agile practices – Scrum, Kanban – with a strong product mindset and customer-centric orientation.
• Proven ability to write clear, well-defined user stories and acceptance criteria using behavior-driven development (BDD) principles.
• Experience prioritizing backlogs using value-based frameworks such as Cost of Delay (CoD) or WSJF.
• Skilled at balancing multiple stakeholder perspectives while keeping the team focused on highest-value outcomes.
• Strong communication skills – able to engage effectively with customers, engineering teams, and business leadership.
• Hands-on experience with tools such as Jira, Confluence, or similar for backlog management and delivery tracking.
• Familiarity with SAFe or scaled Agile frameworks is a strong advantage.
Preferred
• Experience participating in PI Planning, System Demos, and Inspect & Adapt events.
• Understanding of Lean UX, design thinking, and human-centered design practices.
• Familiarity with architectural concepts sufficient to support enabler story definition and runway planning.
• CSPO, SAFe PO/PM, or equivalent Agile certification.
