Duquesne University is seeking a Software Engineer II for their Computer Technology Services. This role is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing software solutions to meet complex business needs and support strategic initiatives while collaborating with stakeholders and team members.
Responsibilities:
- Provides support for high priority web services including the University web portal and mobile application, as well as other custom and third-party software solutions (includes scheduling and performing application installations, maintenance, monitoring, patches, performance tuning, upgrades, account management, and theme and custom feature development)
- Performs application troubleshooting including initial assessment, review of log anomalies and root cause analysis
- Will work with a team of other IT areas including Systems Administrators, Database Administrators and Network Engineers to ensure proper performance and high availability of custom and third-party web applications
- Develops and supports in-house JAVA applications including design and development of user-centric interfaces for web and mobile applications
- Develops and supports Single-Sign-On solutions including Ethos Identity Services, Shibboleth and JAVA encryption based SSO applications
- Develop software solutions to support application integration including integration between the University portal and mobile applications with University CMS, University ERP and custom web applications
- Configures vendor-provided APIs or develops custom APIs to enable system integrations using technologies such as single sign-on (SSO), LDAP authentication, and identity management solutions
- Builds features and applications with a mobile responsive design and ensure compatibility across current browsers and platforms
- Recommends browser compatibility requirements
- Adheres to standards and examines sites/applications for Section 508/ADA and Web standards compliance issues
- Tests all released code for compliance
- Creates and manages service requests with vendors and take necessary maintenance and troubleshooting actions
- Responds to and resolves basic issues, escalates issues when necessary, and works with end users and/or other technical or functional teams to diagnose and correct problems
- Maintains relationships with counterparts at other institutions while remaining active on message boards and mailing lists related to tasks performed
- Leads small to medium-sized projects and participate in software evaluations to support evolving business needs
- Assists in the collection of data, and aids in the creation of performance metrics to look for opportunities to improve software
- Implements security and data protection settings, enforcing security procedures and best practices at all times
- Helps to identify and investigate security risks
- Assists in the development of standards, procedures and processes for application engineering, application integration, application approval and testing for all the web and mobile based services
- Provides guidance and mentoring to junior level team members in support of best practices for application systems analyzing, software engineering and testing
- Creates, reviews, and updates Web Services team documentation including functional and technical specifications, source code notes, schematics, overviews and training documentation according to standards
- Creates training documentation and train end users on functional uses of Web applications
- Completes other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, IT or a related field from an accredited educational institution
- Minimum 1 year web site and/or application development and web application technical administration
- Ability to develop web applications and REST services using Java, javascript, React.js, HTML/CSS
- Experience with relational databases (Oracle preferred) and ability to develop complex query statements
- Knowledge and experience conforming to standards such as 508/ADA, W3C, and other relevant industry standards
- Experience with various operating systems (Linux, UNIX, Windows), web servers (Apache, etc.), single sign-on (CAS, SAML2), and application servers (Tomcat, WebSphere, etc.). Must be able to use a command line interface
- Knowledge of SSL, DNS, networking, ports, hosts, redirects, and other concepts as they relate to Web applications
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication, technical writing skills, and presentation skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the University Community
- Ability and willingness to contribute actively to the mission of the University and to respect the Spiritan Catholic identity of Duquesne University
- Experience with HTML 5, CSS 3, BootStrap, jQuery, and responsive & modern UX design desired
