Staff Software Engineer – Configuration & Experimentation Infrastructure

Russell Tobin is seeking an experienced Staff Software Engineer to build and scale developer infrastructure focused on configuration management, feature flagging, and experimentation platforms. The role involves designing and developing foundational systems that enable engineering teams to safely configure, test, deploy, and measure changes across large-scale distributed environments.

Responsibilities:

• Define the technical strategy and roadmap for configuration management and experimentation infrastructure
• Design, build, and maintain scalable feature flagging, dynamic configuration, and experimentation platforms
• Develop distributed systems and shared libraries that support high-volume configuration and experimentation workloads
• Build developer tools, APIs, automation, and self-service platforms that improve engineering productivity
• Create frameworks for safe software rollouts, including gradual deployments, targeting rules, kill switches, and rollback mechanisms
• Design and implement experimentation infrastructure supporting A/B testing, randomization, assignment, metrics collection, and statistical analysis
• Integrate configuration and experimentation capabilities into CI/CD pipelines and developer workflows
• Establish engineering standards and best practices for configuration management and experimentation across multiple teams
• Collaborate with infrastructure, platform, and application engineering teams to improve deployment reliability and developer experience
• Lead complex technical initiatives from architecture through implementation while mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction

Requirements:

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building large-scale distributed systems
• Strong programming experience in Python, Go, and/or Rust
• Deep experience with configuration management, feature flagging, or experimentation platforms in production environments
• Experience building cloud-native infrastructure and distributed services
• Strong understanding of container orchestration technologies (Kubernetes or similar)
• Experience designing scalable APIs, developer tooling, automation, and CI/CD integrations
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems, scalability, reliability, and performance optimization
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with cross-functional engineering teams
• Ability to work independently and solve ambiguous, high-impact technical problems
