The Senior Civil/Structural Engineer will oversee civil and construction scope for large projects, ensuring quality control, schedule adherence, and budget management while collaborating with various teams to optimize project outcomes.
Responsibilities:
- The Senior Civil/Structural Engineer is responsible for the entirety of the civil scope, from the concepts developed during project proposals, through detail design, till the end of construction and project closeout with all documentation delivered complete and in good quality
- The civil scope for HVDC projects includes earthwork, underground utilities and stormwater, foundations, site development works, building design (including structural and architectural), and aspects of building systems (HVAC and fire, etc.). Most detailed design work is subcontracted rather than performed in-house, the Senior Structural Engineer manages that design work
- This position requires that the engineer have expertise with structural design, specifically industrial multi-story steel building design. HVDC converter buildings have large equipment loads and require large spans of open areas
- Support the Application Engineer & Tendering team with conceptual designs, estimating, and preparation of tender documents related to civil scope
- By working closely with the Project Director and Sourcing Specialist, support the definition of contracting strategy (sub-contract / partner) and its development with the intent to locate accurate and competitive market pricing for the civil design and construction scope. Develop a technical scope of work with a detailed & clear division of responsibility and schedule
- Assist in establishing accurate cost estimates for construction scope. Perform technical analysis of subcontractors/ consortium partners to support sourcing negotiation
- Ensure efficient development of the civil design concept by understanding the customer scope and vision, permitting requirements, local jurisdiction codes and laws. Coordinate and apply feedback from constructability reviews to optimize the design
- Together with Site Management, manage the civil construction scope and coordination with civil subcontractors and/or consortium partners
- Ensure the consistent application of the defined contracting strategy, tracking and documenting all changes to the civil scope, schedule and/or budgets
- Ensure the timely definition and issuance of sub-contracts with EHS, Quality, Planning, Contract Management & Sourcing support
- With site management, ensure integration of Customer EHS requirements in project specific EHS procedure with EHS Lead support
- Manage risks and opportunities related to civil design and construction activities. Review and approval civil design and construction cost deviations while being accountable for overruns
- Lead the Structural design team to timely provide the necessary data required for preparation of site works (specs, designs, BOQ, material lists, etc.) ensuring that all documentation is tracked and transmitted to the proper stakeholders via the appointed documentation management systems
- Ensure the team has the right level of know-how and competency to perform their responsibilities through coaching and development. As the senior civil engineer, you will mentor and train others
- Demonstrate EHS leadership and ensure STOP WORK POLICY is implemented within the team
- Participates in EHS & Quality Gemba walks and leads EHS improvement initiatives during site visits
- Actively and routinely promotes the identification of hazards and near-misses to their teams
- Comply with Quality Procedures. Report or resolve any non-conformances and process in a timely manner
- Accountable for engineering and business key performance indicators (KPIs) on assigned project
- Support the placement of site procedures and timely engineering field support to ensure that site works are conducted to the satisfaction of the Customer, to the level of GE GSI standards
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Professional Engineering License (PE) in the United States in Civil or Structural Engineering
- At least 10 years of experience in engineering, procuring, and constructing (EPC) large capital High Voltage substations, FACTS, and HVDC projects from civil engineering perspective – understanding the basic principles of substation designs and how that drives the civil and structural designs
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 30% of the time to support projects, including occasional international travel. Must comply with GE travel regulations
- Structural design experience, including steel and concrete buildings and non-building structures, electrical substations, equipment support structures, deep and shallow foundations, building services, and site works
- A strong understanding of civil design codes including but not limited to IBC, IEBC, ASCE, IEEE, ACI, AISC, etc
- A good understanding of architectural, electrical, and mechanical design requirements
- Proficiency with engineering design and analysis software including but not limited to Bentley Staad.Pro family, RISA family, AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, BlueBeam, MathCAD or TEDDS, MS Excel, etc
- Project Management Certification PMP
- Strong English verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in overseeing and managing civil design and construction subcontractors
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a team environment
- The Senior Civil Engineer must be creative, able to lead a team, and be accountable for team results to deliver high-quality products on time and under budget
- Able to work independently while multi-tasking
