
The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Genetic Counselor to provide genetic counseling services to patients and families at University of Iowa Health Care within the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center to assure the effective and efficient delivery of health care. Genetic counselors will also provide education to health professionals.
The department intends to hire for 1 position rom either Genetic Counselor, requisition 26004124 or Associate Genetic Counselor, requisition 26004123, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Please apply to the specific position for which you which to be considered or both.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge base regarding genetics.
• Accepts referrals and conducts pre-consultation assessments.
• Provides educational information and supportive counseling. Explains tests, reviews potential results and discusses
• implications with the family/patient.
• Arranges for medical consultations, referrals, and testing as necessary.
• Attends Tumor Board meetings; provides testing recommendations as appropriate.
• Provides education/information to physicians or other health professionals or insurance companies as requested.
• Participates/supervises in the education of students, residents, and fellows rotating through the division.
• Serves as an advocate for patients and families.
• Represents and promotes the services of the division and related program; participates in division programs and activities.
• Serves as speaker for educational offerings on topics of genetics and cancer.
• Participates in design and implementation of the research projects as requested.
• Maintains active database of patients with positive test results.
• Provides appropriate referrals to additional providers within Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center for those patients tested and found to be at risk.
Required Qualifications
• Master's degree in genetics, genetic counseling or medical molecular genetics.
• Board certified or board eligible as a genetic counselor.
• Knowledge of current NCCN testing guidelines for testing in patients with a personal or family history of cancer.
• One to three year’s experience in the field of genetic counseling.
• Proficient in computer software applications (:Nord, Excel and web searches).
• Demonstrated excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Desired Qualifications
• Educational training in the diagnosis of cancer.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Spanish.
• Previous experience or additional education in cancer genetics.
• Previous experience in genetics research and/or recruitment of human subjects for research projects.
• Knowledge of University and University of Iowa Healthcare policies and procedures.
