The Massachusetts Veterans Homes are independent state agencies that organizationally report to the Secretary of the Executive Office of Veterans Services (EOVS). The Veterans Homes are owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and address the needs of a wide variety of veterans, including long term care and domiciliary services meeting the veteran residents’ care and psychosocial needs. The care and services provided by the Veterans’ Homes are supported by a staff of approximately 450, representing physicians, advanced practice clinicians, nurses, aides, social workers, recreation therapist, physical and occupational therapy, speech language pathology, educators, building trades, dietary, housekeeping, managers, support staff, consultants and contractors. The Massachusetts Veterans Home (MVH) at Chelsea, a dedicated long-term care facility committed to providing the highest quality personal health care services to Massachusetts veterans with dignity, honor, and respect, is seeking an energetic and seasoned Registered Nurse III – Weekend Supervisor to oversee clinical operations on weekends for adult and geriatric veteran patients. In this role, the Registered Nurse III – Weekend Supervisor will assume administration and supervision of weekend shift nursing units, personnel, and quality of care, ensuring that our veteran residents receive the highest quality of care.
Responsibilities
1. Provide direction and overall delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse resident veteran population.
2. Assess, plan, and evaluate nursing care and veteran/family progress towards goals while guiding staff as needed.
3. Serve as shift lead in collaboration with the Director of Nursing and Assistant Director of Nursing while maintaining accountability for scheduling of staff, supplies, and managing expenses.
4. Foster high standards of resident care through the provision of diligent orientation and continuing education efforts of staff including best practices, teamwork, and professional development.
5. Interact and collaborate with departments and personnel to facilitate positive patient care outcomes including physical/occupational therapy, hospice, pharmacy, lab, housekeeping, and geropsychology.
6. Support the Massachusetts Veterans Home at Chelsea’s mission, vision, and operational policies while maintaining regulatory and departmental compliance with Joint Commission and state/federal regulations.
7. Develop methods for the evaluation of veteran care, such as ongoing medical record review, report findings, actions, and follow-up via the Nursing Department Performance Improvement process.
8. Maintain personal/professional growth and proficiency by attending in-services, seminars, and workshops.
9. Remain current with healthcare trends and contemporary nursing practices.
10. Facilitate daily or weekly staff meetings to discuss patient status, departmental communications, and other concerns or issues.
11. Perform routing personnel and administrative duties, such as submission of payroll/attendance, ongoing feedback and performance appraisals to assigned staff, and document performance matters through progressive discipline when appropriate.
12. Perform and submit initial Department of Public Health (DPH) reportables in Gateway.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.*
Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
