Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline is a reliable natural gas transporter serving America’s heartland since 1904. The Engineer, Design Mechanical (Compression) will lead and oversee engineering aspects of major capital projects related to the design and execution of natural gas facilities, ensuring quality and compliance with design standards.
Responsibilities:
- Leads and oversees all engineering aspects of major capital projects
- Supervises the work of internal/external resources to ensure quality and quantity of work
- Provide mechanical engineering design deliverables, including but not limited to, project scopes and estimates, design forms, project construction workspace drawings, easement exhibits, site layouts, mechanical construction drawings, and fabrication drawings
- Size, specify, and order all mechanical equipment and materials for various natural gas projects
- Collaborate with Business Development, Customer Solutions, and Legal to develop contractual Construction, Ownership, and Operating Agreements with external customers
- Provide mechanical engineering technical support, troubleshooting, and problem solving for operating issues relating to pipeline, measurement, regulation, compression, storage, and other related gas transmission and gas storage equipment and facilities
- Review, develop and implement Company design standards and specifications
- Research and analyze technical data, industry specifications and standards, and vendor manuals to determine feasibility of design and/or application
- Maintain knowledge and understanding of relevant technologies
- Participate in Company and industry studies and projects to enhance the overall safety, reliability, and efficiency of the gas transmission and storage systems
- Serve as Company liaison at community events, help with volunteer efforts
- Provide general guidance and direction to others based on design experiences
- Serve as a mentor, coach, or trainer for less experienced engineers
- Represent management in coordinating activities and communicating technical policies and procedures
- Serve as a Company subject matter expert for specific natural gas engineering field(s)
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical or civil engineering (or a relevant engineering discipline) from an ABET – Accredited Engineering Program
- 8 years of experience in design engineering or a related field
- Valid driver's license and insurability
- Ability to work in both an open office environment as well as outside in varied weather conditions
- Ability to understand and apply directions, policies, procedures, guidelines, specifications, standards, requirements, and Federal/State/Local regulations
- Ability to work and collaborate with others throughout the organization
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

- Knowledge of Federal regulations and Industry standards including CFR DOT 192, ASME B31.4, ASME B31.8, API 5L, ANSI B16.5, MSS SP-75, AGA Reports, etc
- Ability to serve as a subject matter resource for the natural gas industry
- Experience with software tools for compressor performance and sizing
- Experience in the design and construction of natural gas compression facilities
- Knowledge of natural gas dehydration system operation and design
- Experience with building specifications and descriptions to vendors for soliciting quotes for compression related equipment
- 8 years of experience in applying engineering principles toward the design, construction, or operations of natural gas facilities
- Fundamentals of Engineering certificate or Professional Engineering license
- Advanced degree
- Experience as a project lead
- Experience in construction
- Experience using financial reporting or project execution software
- Experience serving on, or presenting in, a natural gas industry conference, committee, or event
- Understanding of air and noise permitting requirements for natural gas compression and dehydration facilities
