Senior Mechanical Engineer

Sargent & Lundy Consulting works on behalf of clients to support electric power projects by evaluating and optimizing their technical, commercial, environmental, and financial aspects. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will provide development support, conceptual design, owner’s engineer services, technical evaluations, engineering design reviews, due diligence, project economic and cost analysis, risk assessments, and contract development for conventional power projects.

Responsibilities:

• In this role, you will provide development support, conceptual design and owner’s engineer services to clients including performing technical evaluations of electric power generation projects and facilities. You will also have the opportunity to support project economic and cost analysis, risk assessments, and contract development
• Your responsibilities will include engineering design reviews, technical due diligence, project development support, and conceptual design. Particular experience in mechanical design of conventional power projects is desired
• You will have the opportunity to travel within the United States as well as internationally
• You are expected to lead others in taking engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs
• Leaders in these roles often direct automation and process-improvement work, for example, how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation and guiding when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used while ensuring results are checked
• Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required

Requirements:

• Candidate can be based anywhere within the United States
• We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position
• This position requires a BSME in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program with a strong academic background
• 7 or more years of experience in the electric power industry, including experience in detailed design of the mechanical systems of conventional power projects, specifically:
• Simple cycle gas turbines
• Combined cycle projects
• Coal fired generation
• Steam systems, or
• Reciprocating engines (RICE)
• Experience in development support and conceptual design of conventional power projects
• Excellent technical communication and writing skills are required
• Experience in technical due diligence and owner's engineering design reviews of conventional power projects is a plus
• General understanding of power station operations and performance reviews is a plus
• General understanding of process design at electric power generation facilities is a plus
• Economic, cost analysis, and contract development experience is a plus
• A familiarity with international design codes and standards is preferred
• Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required
• We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows
