SOFTWARE ENGINEER 1

HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding is the largest industrial employer in Virginia, specializing in the design and construction of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines. They are seeking an entry-level Software Engineer to design and build information systems that support the construction of complex products, while contributing to critical business systems that support national defense.

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and test operating systems-level software, compilers, and network distribution software
• Set operational specifications, and formulate and analyze software requirements
• May design embedded systems software
• Help develop, maintain, and enhance systems that integrate with enterprise platforms such as SAP, Teamcenter, SharePoint, and others
• Participate in collaborative sessions with developers, business partners, systems engineers, solution architects, and administrators to understand requirements, implement features, and deliver value across multiple technical domains

Requirements:

• Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience
• One of the following may be used as an equivalent to Bachelor's Degree for Information Technology Related Positions Only: NNS Apprentice School graduate, Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate, Associate's Degree or other formal 2 year program and 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of relevant non-exempt experience, Military Paygrade E-5 or above military experience, High School/GED and 4 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant exempt experience, High School/GED and 8 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant non-exempt experience, A relevant professional certification can be substituted for a Bachelor's Degree, Bachelors in Science or 4 equivalent years of experience
• Candidate should have a basic understanding of Microsoft Visual Studio
• Programming Languages: C/C++, C#, .NET, Java, Python
• Knowledge of product development utilizing PLM systems
• IT systems architecture and use of each stage of the Software Development Life Cycle
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and direction
• Written/oral communication and teaming skills
• DevOps methodologies and tools such as CI/CD with Git or Azure DevOps
• Test Driven Development (TDD), common design patterns (such as Dependency Injection, Adapters), and unit testing frameworks (e.g., MSTest, NUnit)
