Summary

This position includes a $3,000 hiring bonus. You would receive the first payment of $1,000 after six months of employment, the second after a year, and the third after a year and a half. If you leave within six months of any of the installments, you would owe LCCC your last installment amount back. 

• Typical Hours of Work: Monday - Friday 6:30 am - 3:00 pm. Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends is required as needed to support institutional operations.
• Screening will begin ASAP and continue until the position is filled. 
• Start date to be determined, but as soon as practicable after the hiring/interview process. 

Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time, benefited Staff, S24 level position. Starting wage range: $15.60 - $19.11/hourly, depending upon experience.

JOB SUMMARY
The Grounds Maintenance I position is a full-time benefited position responsible for ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and visual appeal of outdoor spaces through tasks such as landscaping, lawn care, and snow removal. The Specialist, Grounds I, operates equipment, performs routine maintenance, and collaborates with facilities staff to support a well-maintained, welcoming campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position will perform on-call duties on a rotating basis.

Ensure the upkeep and appearance of campus grounds by performing landscaping, lawn care, irrigation management, and seasonal maintenance tasks to maintain a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment. 

• Support and execute daily, weekly, and monthly grounds inspection and maintenance activities.  
• Irrigation system installation and repair as well as site grading for proper drainage. 
• Application of pesticides as directed by licensed supervisor and keep pesticide records after application. 
• Perform snow removal 
• Respond to service calls/work orders as needed. 

Ensure equipment maintenance by conducting regular inspections, performing necessary repairs, and coordinating preventative maintenance schedules to maximize operational efficiency. 

• Ensure the safe and productive use of equipment utilized in grounds maintenance and associated work by servicing both light and heavy-duty grounds care equipment.
• Operate and maintain snow removal equipment.

Ensure grounds safety and compliance by adhering to policies and procedures, conducting regular inspections, and addressing potential risks to maintain a secure and well-regulated campus environment. 

• Comply with all applicable department and College standards, policies, and procedures, including OSHA and safety procedures. 

Provide support in other facility areas by assisting with maintenance tasks, coordinating resources, and ensuring operational efficiency across departments. 

• Perform vehicle maintenance in the absence of Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic. 

Maintain up-to-date expertise by actively participating in trainings and professional development opportunities and applying new knowledge to improve job performance and support institutional goals.

Other responsibilities may be assigned based on contemporary institutional needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge

• Knowledge of plant care, pruning, fertilization, pest control, and landscape design. 
• Knowledge of OSHA requirements and building code regulations; ability to learn, interpret and apply current pertinent federal, state and local laws and regulations. 
• Familiarity with tools and machinery such as mowers, trimmers, and snow removal equipment. 
• Knowledge of irrigation installation, maintenance, and repair. 

Skills 

• Safely and efficiently operate and repair a wide range of groundskeeping machinery and tools. 
• Must be able to drive vehicles and operate large complex maintenance equipment.  
• Proficient in computer-based training software, Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Outlook, and other relevant software applications to effectively complete job tasks. 
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the capacity to convey complex information clearly. 
• Effectively prioritize tasks and manage time to complete maintenance and landscaping work on schedule. 

Abilities 

• Capable of managing daily tasks with minimal supervision while collaborating with colleagues on larger projects. 
• Ability to read and interpret instructions in oral, written, or diagrammatical form (e.g., a flow chart of a process).  
• Ability to support time-based requests; able to function effectively in a multi-tasking, fast-paced environment with deadlines, frequent interruptions, and some interpersonal pressure. 
• Capable of representing the organization in a professional manner, adapting to various situations with maturity, and maintaining confidentiality and discretion at all times. 
• Ability to carry out physical tasks such as mowing, digging, planting, and snow removal over extended periods. 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

• While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required
• There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations
• While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
• There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
• An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more to perform essential position functions
• For lifts exceeding 50 pounds, an assisted lift technique will be required
• Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
• The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be instances of somewhat loud environments when working with certain tools and outside environments. 
• The work environment is mainly outdoors, occasionally working in confined spaces.
• There may be a risk of being exposed to hazardous chemicals.
• An employee must be able to transition between stationary tasks and activities to frequent movement activities quickly and as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.  
• Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to meet the college insurance carrier requirements. 
• One year of experience working in grounds maintenance. 
• Possess or ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months of hire. 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two years of experience maintaining irrigations systems including piping and controls 
• Two years of experience servicing and providing minor repairs to equipment and power tools. 
• One year of experience operating large equipment requiring Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). 
• Ability to obtain and maintain Pesticide Applicators License.
