Software Engineering Consultant

Innovative Medical Staffing is a healthcare staffing partner that helps hospitals and healthcare organizations secure dependable physician coverage across a wide range of specialties. They are seeking an experienced Software Engineering Consultant to provide an independent technical review of software projects, internal systems, and development processes, ensuring sound engineering practices and identifying areas for improvement.

Responsibilities:

• Review existing and in-progress software projects for overall quality, functionality, and technical soundness
• Audit source code, system architecture, databases, APIs, integrations, cloud infrastructure, and deployment processes
• Evaluate code quality, documentation, testing practices, security controls, and development standards
• Identify technical debt, performance issues, system vulnerabilities, scalability concerns, and potential points of failure
• Review third-party integrations and internal automations for reliability, data integrity, and maintainability
• Assess AI-enabled features and workflows for appropriate implementation, accuracy, security, and operational value
• Validate project estimates, development timelines, technical requirements, and proposed solutions
• Review work completed by internal developers, contractors, and outside development partners
• Provide clear, prioritized recommendations based on urgency, business impact, and level of effort
• Help establish development standards, review procedures, documentation requirements, and quality-control processes
• Translate technical findings into straightforward business language for leadership
• Participate in project planning and provide technical guidance when new systems or features are being considered
• Provide limited implementation or troubleshooting support when necessary

Requirements:

• Significant professional experience in software engineering, technical consulting, software architecture, or a similar senior-level role
• Strong understanding of modern software development practices, application architecture, and the full software development lifecycle
• Demonstrated experience reviewing or auditing software projects, codebases, infrastructure, or development teams
• Ability to evaluate code quality across modern programming languages, frameworks, and application environments
• Experience with APIs, third-party integrations, workflow automation, and interconnected business systems
• Strong knowledge of relational and non-relational databases, data modeling, query performance, and data integrity
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, deployment pipelines, system monitoring, access controls, and security best practices
• Experience evaluating application performance, reliability, maintainability, and scalability
• Ability to identify technical risks and translate findings into clear, practical recommendations
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly when working with non-technical leadership
• Ability to work independently, maintain objectivity, and appropriately challenge technical assumptions
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
• Experience reviewing AI, machine learning, or automation-enabled applications
• Familiarity with healthcare, staffing, credentialing, scheduling, or professional-services workflows
• Experience managing or evaluating outside software development firms and independent contractors
• Background in cybersecurity, compliance, data privacy, or technology risk assessment
• Experience helping growing companies establish engineering standards and technical governance
