Senior Data Engineer

MARA is hiring for a role focused on ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and strategic use of operational telemetry across Marathon’s global Bitcoin mining fleet. The role develops monitoring and alerting frameworks, improves telemetry data quality and remote workflows, and coordinates operational improvements across teams.

Responsibilities:

• Own the end-to-end quality of telemetry across miners, power systems, environmental sensors, and site infrastructure
• Develop standard schemas and naming conventions that ensure consistency and clarity across all sites
• Partner with data engineering teams to enhance ingestion pipelines, reduce data gaps, and implement automated validation logic
• Conduct regular audits of telemetry feeds and documentation to ensure operational readiness and compliance
• Design and maintain a unified alerting system that captures miner performance variance, power anomalies, thermal issues, and site-level events
• Implement structured escalation paths that support rapid problem identification and clear, actionable responses
• Ensure monitoring tools provide fleet-wide situational awareness required for uptime, safety, and optimization efforts
• Lead cross-site initiatives to improve miner efficiency, power usage, uptime, environmental stability, and failure detection
• Author and maintain SOPs for remote troubleshooting, telemetry recovery, and configuration workflows—leveraging strong procedural discipline and documentation skills
• Drive root cause analysis for recurring issues and implement preventative solutions
• Partner with Site Operations, Firmware, Tools, and Data teams to develop and refine the systems that support remote command, configuration, and monitoring
• Act as the technical and operational liaison for remote operations activities touching multiple sites or systems
• Provide training, documentation, and guidance to internal teams on best practices for telemetry, monitoring tools, and remote workflows
• Produce fleet-wide performance reports and trend analyses that support strategic decision-making
• Develop dashboards that simplify complex telemetry into meaningful operational insights
• Identify optimization opportunities based on data-driven assessment of site activities, miner performance, and operational bottlenecks

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field required
• 7+ years of progressive experience in technical operations, systems engineering, or a related field, with increasing scope and responsibility
• 3+ years of hands-on experience with Bitcoin mining hardware and firmware, including ASIC configuration, hashrate optimization, and performance diagnostics
• Demonstrated experience designing and operating telemetry, SCADA, or industrial monitoring systems at scale across geographically distributed sites
• Experience partnering with data engineering teams on ingestion pipelines, schema design, and data quality initiatives
• Track record of developing and maintaining SOPs, runbooks, and operational documentation in high-complexity environments
• Deep familiarity with Bitcoin mining hardware ecosystems (Antminer, Whatsminer, Luxor firmware, or equivalent) and the operational parameters that drive performance and longevity
• Proficiency with telemetry and monitoring platforms such as Grafana, InfluxDB, Prometheus, or comparable enterprise tools
• Working knowledge of SQL or similar query languages for operational data analysis
• Scripting ability in Python or Bash for workflow automation, alerting logic, and ad hoc data manipulation
• Understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VPN, VLAN, firewall rules) as applied to remote site connectivity and secure operations
• Familiarity with power systems monitoring, including UPS, PDU, and environmental sensor data (temperature, humidity, airflow)
• Experience building or configuring operational dashboards that translate raw telemetry into actionable fleet-level visibility
• Systems thinker with a strong bias for root-cause resolution over symptomatic fixes; comfortable navigating ambiguity in complex operational environments
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to document complex processes clearly and present operational findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Proven ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams without direct authority; skilled at building alignment across engineering, operations, and data organizations
• High degree of organizational discipline; thrives on process clarity, structured escalation, and measurable outcomes
• Self-directed and proactive with the ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
• Master's degree in a relevant discipline preferred
