Law and Policy Analyst

Temple University is seeking a Law and Policy Analyst for its Center for Public Health Law Research, which uses scientific tools and methods to evaluate the impact of law on health. The role researches and analyzes laws and policies, contributes to legal mapping datasets and scholarly publications, supports grant writing, and communicates findings through presentations and other dissemination activities.

Responsibilities:

• Conducts federal, state, and local law and policy research, including statutes, regulations, and case law
• Conducts international and comparative law and policy research
• Conducts historical legal and policy research
• Researches and synthesizes complex legal issues on a wide variety of public health law topics
• Drafts background memorandums summarizing the legal and policy landscape
• Works in a collaborative team-based setting across multiple projects and deadlines
• Collaborates with external clients and users on dataset creation
• Participates in all phases of legal mapping dataset creation, including scope conceptualization and refinement, coding the law, quality control, publication, and dissemination
• Uses MonQcle software to build and code legal datasets
• Participates in legal coding review process
• Drafts publication materials such as research protocols and policy briefs to accompany datasets
• Works with intern cohorts
• Contributes to writing grants
• Drafts white papers, issue briefs, blog posts, and other scholarly publications
• Analyzes and summarizes research findings for dissemination
• Submits conference abstracts and attends professional conferences
• Conducts trainings and presentations on the organization’s work
• Reviews social science and public health research
• Coordinates with partially and fully remote staff
• Participates in project team and all staff meetings
• Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements:

• • JD degree
• • At least two (2) years of relevant post-graduate research experience
• • Relevant experience to include any of the following: legal epidemiology research, legal or policy research, analysis of statutes and regulations, development of legal or policy research products (e.g., policy briefs, manuscripts, legal datasets), and/or work on interdisciplinary research projects focused on law and public health
• • Experience in using legal research databases including Lexis, Westlaw, and HeinOnline
• • Experience with Excel, PowerPoint, Word, OneDrive Dropbox and web interfaces
• • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
• • Strong organizational skills
• • Proficiency in reviewing and writing scholarly publications
• • Ability to analyze and communicate research findings for diverse audiences
• • Ability to prioritize and meet shifting project deadlines with flexibility
• • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders across multiple disciplines and sectors
• • Ability to solve problems analytically and think critically
• • Ability to maintain professionalism and respect towards others
• • Proven interest in public health law and developing legal expertise in a particular policy area
• • Demonstrated understanding of how public health is affected by systemic racial, economic, and social inequities

• • At least One (1) year of public health law experience
