Senior Software Engineer II - Solution Lifecycle (Remote Eligible)

Smartsheet empowers teams to manage work seamlessly and is uniting human teams with AI agents to automate tasks and uncover insights. The Solution Lifecycle team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer II to build scalable backend services, strengthen core infrastructure, address distributed systems challenges, and contribute to reliability, technical leadership, and collaborative engineering practices.

Responsibilities:

• Build Next-Generation Backend Services: Design and build scalable back-end services for Smartsheet's next-generation applications, solving complex distributed systems challenges while partnering closely with product management and other key stakeholders
• Contribute to Core Infrastructure: Help build and maintain the core infrastructure that serves as the backbone for Smartsheet. Maintain and scale a robust environment that ensures the foundational reliability, stability, and performance expected by all of our users
• Contribute to Database & Infrastructure Reliability: Dive deep into system internals. With team support, you will contribute to managing and upgrading large-scale database infrastructure, maintaining complex replication topologies, and automating core operations using AWS, Golang, MySQL, Terraform, Temporal, and GitLab-CI
• Collaborate via Mob Programming: Work closely with the team every day in a real-time development environment. Actively participate as both a driver and a navigator, asking questions, sharing ideas, and contributing directly to the team's collective code ownership.Take part in code reviews and architectural discussions as you work with other software engineers and product managers
• Practice High-Quality Engineering: Use Test-Driven Development (TDD) to ensure our foundational systems are resilient before they ever touch production. Beyond the code, you will be an active participant in our team book clubs and psychologically safe retrospectives to help continuously elevate how we work
• Use AI tools: Actively use AI tools to improve personal and team efficiency across coding, testing, design, and troubleshooting, exploring AI integration opportunities within team processes and features, and coaching others on effective AI use
• Participate in On-Call Rotations: Share responsibility for operational health of our systems as part of a supportive on-call rotation. You'll be ramped in gradually with experienced teammates available to help

Requirements:

• 8+ years of experience and proficiency in at least one modern programming language
• 3+ years of experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, etc.)
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and understands the database internals and reliability (MySQL)
• 8+ years software development experience building highly scalable, highly available applications
• Experience developing, documenting, and supporting REST APIs
• A genuine interest in team-centric engineering practices
• You should be comfortable (or eager to become comfortable) working in a mob programming environment the majority of the day, writing test-driven code, and sharing system ownership
• A critical thinker who enjoys troubleshooting complex technical problems and wants to understand how large-scale systems maintain stability and scale
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the confidence to ask questions, participate in group discussions, and think out loud with your team
• 1+ year professional experience leveraging AI to improve personal productivity in service of building complex SaaS feature sets
• A BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical industry experience)
• Legally eligible to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis
• Go experience is a plus but not required—we'll teach you. Java, Kotlin or Python backgrounds translate well
