Software Engineer III - IntelliScript (Remote)

Milliman IntelliScript develops data-driven software-as-a-service products for insurance and life sciences clients. The Software Engineer III will design, develop, modernize, and maintain cloud-native solutions for clinical data products, while applying AI-assisted software delivery practices, AWS best practices, and rigorous quality controls.

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, maintain and improve software and other technical solutions that solve business challenges
• Play a key role in redesigning our monolithic legacy products in AWS
• Champion AWS best practices
• Mentoring team members on software engineering best practices
• Focus on overall product quality
• Develop and maintain unit and integration tests
• Responsibly self-manage workload given project priorities, deadlines and deliverables
• Help the team achieve sprint goals through independent work and collaboration
• Participate in code reviews to promote quality and best practices
• Support code deployments
• Use generative AI across refinement, planning, implementation, test generation, and code review, and improve how the team applies it
• Write the specifications, steering context, and prompts that make AI-generated work predictable, reviewable, and traceable to requirements
• Hold the quality gates: review AI-generated code with the same rigor as your own, and confirm testing, security, and observability standards are met before anything ships
• Design and build against clinical data sources, including EHR data, FHIR/HL7 interfaces, and medical claims data

Requirements:

• We are hiring for two roles and are seeking strong expertise in one of two areas:

• Electronic health records (EHR) and clinical data, or
• AI-assisted software delivery as an established professional practice

• Candidates with strength in both areas are ideal; however, those with deep expertise in one and working fluency in the other are also encouraged to apply
• 5+ years of relevant software engineering experience
• Strong experience with C# (.NET 8), React, and SQL
• Experience developing cloud-native applications in AWS
• Understanding of DevOps best practices using GitHub and Terraform
• Familiarity with Agile delivery practices, such as Scrum
• Experience across the full software development lifecycle
• Strong technical design, problem-solving, and debugging skills
• Experience with domain-driven design
• Experience with microservices architecture
• Experience with event-driven architecture
• Experience writing testable code, including unit, integration, and related automated tests
• Passion for building high-quality systems using AWS best practices
• Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• Proven analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and implement business and functional requirements
• Understanding of the value of test automation and a commitment to incorporating it into everyday development practices
• Hands-on professional experience using AI-assisted development tools—such as GitHub Copilot, Copilot agents, Claude Code, or comparable tools—as part of daily software delivery in a corporate environment
• A repeatable approach to AI-assisted delivery, including specification- and context-driven prompting, defined human review checkpoints, automated test coverage for generated code, and traceability from requirements to code to tests
• Sound judgment about where AI adds value and where it does not, including when to reject, revise, or avoid generated output
• Strong working knowledge of electronic health record (EHR) data and clinical workflows, including FHIR/HL7 interoperability and clinical or claims data integration
• Curiosity, adaptability, and a strong commitment to continuous learning
• Ability to translate clinical workflows, patient eligibility processes, and digital health data into strong product and data design decisions
• Strong knowledge of the field and a proactive approach to staying current with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies

• Experience working in environments subject to HIPAA and/or PCI regulations
• Experience in the software-as-a-service (SaaS), life sciences, and/or clinical trials industries
• Certified Scrum Developer (CSD) certification
• AWS certifications
• Experience with test-driven development (TDD)
• Experience designing systems using event-driven architecture
• Experience modernizing on-premises legacy applications in an AWS cloud environment
• Experience with clinical informatics, including data structures, storage, relationships, and data maintenance
• In-depth knowledge of medical claims and electronic health records (EHRs), including ICD-10 codes, data management, and research use cases
• Experience building or configuring development agents, agent orchestration, or multi-agent workflows
• Experience using AI to analyze legacy code, generate specifications, and produce documentation as part of modernization efforts
• Experience with Atlassian tools, including Jira and Confluence
• Experience mentoring teams on AI-assisted engineering practices
